Maybe it was a mistake to read the longer, anniversary edition.
The writing was very good, and I really liked the start of the book as well as the story of Lakeside. However, there was a lot of rambling and build-up that didn't really go anywhere. The lack of emotion in the main character also made me care a lot less. Ironically, I think this book would have been better with fewer gods. The ending was tied up well.
1.5/5, rounded up.

An interesting world and concept. I like the setting and some of the characters but it just seems so slow and random. Most of the time I’m wondering what is going on and why. It seems like it just goes all over the place, making it hard to feel connected or clear on the plot. I feel no investment in what is going on.
FUCK’S SAKE IT ONLY TOOK ME 3 YEARS TO FINISH THIS. I can’t give it more than 2 stars when the majority of the book I was wishing it was over. This was not my jam... I will not be reading any other long fantasies of this nature. Sorry, Neil.

Okay
Really original idea. Although very slow and sometimes I felt it was going nowhere. The plot kind of bored me and it wasn’t super clear. Maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more if I knew more about Norse Mythology. Just not the book for me.

I had heard of this book before, and although I’m not American, I was enticed by the subject. The book was great, the story entertaining and the characters powerful. What I enjoyed most was following our main characters and Wednesdays in their small tasks. I give this 3 stars because I enjoyed it, but I felt at the end like the concept had space for going much deeper. Maybe I missed the point.
This book is a whirlwind, I think my review might be all over the place, but honestly it felt like the book was as well.... most of the way through the book I was quite confused, but I was pushing myself to pay attention and push forward.
This audio book is a full cast, so that was helpful to keep characters separate as they had their own voice, but there are so many characters it was still difficult to remember them all. I wish I had kept notes, it would have saved me a lot of time trying to remember certain people.
Throughout the book you have mini stories that you aren't sure how they will fit in, they are centuries old and seem to have no baring whatsoever on the story as you are listening/reading at that time.
As we get into part 3, it starts to come crashing together.
Shadow was honestly so good it was hard to hate him, but it was still hard to like him sometimes because it was so frustrating how he just went along with so much and when he would ask a question, he was told not to ask, so he'd shrug his shoulders and keep on moving along, it was infuriating!
This story follows Shadow after he gets out of prison and his travels with Wednesday before the 'big war' there is much anticipation built even though the story really seems to drag in places.
The war itself was very anticlimactic in my opinion, after all of this buildup, the end of the war happened so simply and so quickly it did feel like a major letdown.
The epilogue was my favorite part, not because it was ending, but because all of my unanswered questions were finally answered, all of the mini stories were brought together beautifully.
Overall I did enjoy this book, the ride, and the overall thoughts it provoked while reading and after. It is long, it drags a bit in the middle but if you are up for it, I say give it a try, you might love it too.
