After thoroughly enjoying Daughter of the Moon Goddess, I had high hopes for Immortal, perhaps too high. Unfortunately, this book fell flat in every area I hoped it would shine.

Character development was virtually non-existent. The protagonists lacked depth and emotional nuance, making it difficult to connect with or care about their journeys. The relationships felt painfully forced and devoid of any natural progression or chemistry. Rather than building authentic connections, the story seemed obsessed with pushing the couple together and then tearing them apart repeatedly, in a cycle that quickly grew tiresome.

The plot itself offered little in the way of originality or emotional impact. Even the twist towards the end, which had the potential to be compelling, wasn’t enough to redeem the disjointed storytelling or shallow character arcs.

Immortal was a frustrating read that never lived up to its premise or the promise of the author’s earlier work. "Disappointing" doesn’t even begin to cover it.

I thought about DNFing this book every day

This was beautifully written novel with stunning lyrical prose, a lush vivid world! Plus the I love the magic which having read her duology I was familiar with it.

It definitely started off a little slow as the world building took priority however once the plot started to ramp up, I was absolutely sucked in and i loved all the twists & reveals. The romance was great and I loved that we got a 'touch her again and you die' moment. Absolutely sucker for that

I enjoyed Liyens character but I did feel that Zhangwei was a little bland and lacked emotional depth I wanted.

Overall though I did love this just not an all time favourite like her duology is.

sue lynn tan freaking does it again y’all.

the banter. the magic. the grief. the badass heroine who is vulnerable and true to herself. i audibly gasped throughout the story. such good twists.

the one thing that didn’t really do it for me was the fact that it took liyen SO long to move past her “the god of war is just a murderous killing machine” moment. it felt too drawn out and her unwillingness to really explore those beliefs didn’t really match with the rest of her moral compass.
