Majority of this was very YA and a bit boring. Until around 60% where it picked up and was interesting. Most of the time the main character Liyen pissed me off with her childlike attitude. The ending wasn't very satisfying either... not sure if I'll give the author another chance.

The romance doesn’t make sense until maybe 3/4 into the book. But the plot relies heavily on the romance, so the book doesn’t make sense until you’re basically done it. However, again, incredible worldbuilding and evocative imagery from Tan.
