I unfortunately didn’t enjoy this as much as Sue’s other duology. It felt very chaotic at times and I had a hard time following who was who. It just didn’t flow well for me.
IT HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL
Honestly if I wasn’t so upset about the “potential” it would probably be 4 stars but I AM.
There were so many good things. The creatures! The mythology! The magic!
But unfortunately it really just felt like 3 individual books stuffed into one. It honestly felt rushed. Each of the 3 arcs could have been their own book. It would have given the author more room to expand upon certain ideas that I felt got steam rolled.
I felt that the monumental plot twist just didn’t get enough time to be set up correctly. It felt like it made sense on a technicality instead being carefully prepped and teased for its full effect.
I loved the writing, I loved the story, the characters were great, it just needed the space to be more.

A stand-alone set in the same world as Daughter of the Moon Goddess.
What’s to love…
- Set in the same world as the Daughter of the Moon Goddess duology.
- standalone romantic fantasy
- lush world
- broody MMC
- action-packed
- FMC with quiet strength
- Top tier banter
- political intrigue
What you may not love…
- starts a bit slow
- romance is a bit more insta-love than I prefer
Thank you NetGalley and Avon & Harper Voyager for sending this book (eARC) for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD READ! I'm so glad I got to experience this book!
Tan's prose is lyrical and immersive, painting vivid landscapes from the mortal realm of Tianxia to the celestial expanse of the Immortal Realm. The world-building is rich, drawing inspiration from Chinese mythology and folklore, and the characters are well-developed, each with their own motivations and secrets. I love how she painted the scenery of the environment and worlds itself.
I was all aboard and one of my FAVORITE reads (probably still is but I'd be remiss to not mention) until the end of the book.
However, the novel's pacing particularly towards the end, detracts from its overall impact. The climax and resolution feel rushed, with significant revelations delivered through exposition rather than being fully explored through the narrative. This "tell not show" approach diminishes the emotional weight of the story's conclusion, making it feel somewhat unearned. We get something really impactful about two characters TOLD to us and it just felt things weren't 'earned'.
Despite this, Immortal remains a compelling read, offering a fresh take on the enemies-to-lovers trope and exploring themes of duty, identity, and self-determination. Fans of Tan's previous works and readers seeking a standalone fantasy with a strong romantic element will find much to enjoy here.
I'm eager to read her other ones!!!
