too long, average King

Since this won reader's choice for horror 2017 I feel like I can say what I really feel. I hated this book. First of all it wasn't scary, it was incredibly boring. I struggled not to fall asleep while reading it especially since most of the middle of the book is just about women falling asleep. I also strongly disliked the male vs. female dichotomy. The male characters, even the "better" male characters were one note and fell flat. The female characters were uninspired. This is the perfect blah book for the insipid version of feminism that is currently so popular.

Unfortunately, I was not able to read past around page 45. There were a lot of characters performing mundane activities and descriptions of the memories they were having in those moments. Nothing at all happened in the entire 40+ pages I read. There was no discernible plot.

I imagine that at some point these characters will become part of an actual story, but I was terribly bored, and the idea of picking this book up again filled me with dread, so as much as I hate to quit reading a book... I just don't want to swim around in limbo waiting on a plot that may or may not materialize in a way I would enjoy.

Because I did not read enough of this book to know if it would have changed my mind later, I don't feel it would be fair to leave a star rating.

3.5 stars really. A pervading sense of almost, but not quite.

I don't really read Stephen King any more. I read a lot of his early stuff when I was younger, but eventually lost patience as the books got thicker, more baggy, and ended abruptly, almost nonsensically, as if he woke up one morning after typing hundreds of thousands of words and said, "I'm bored now". Very frustrating as a reader having waded through so much to realise that it wasn't really taking you anywhere.

So it was with some trepidation that I picked up this huge, 700 page monster. And, unfortunately, it was more of the same. But worse. It seems the influence of Owen King not only failed to add some much needed plotting and structure, but also took away a lot of what makes his father so readable: good writing.

There was so little to enjoy here. Characters were bland and one dimensional, the writing workaday, and the plot incredibly simplistic. Clearly this was supposed to be some riff on sexism, misogyny, feminism and the modern world, but other than a few vague paragraphs it didn't really discuss the issues in any depth.

Amazingly, in the acknowledgements at the end of the book the Kings thank an editor who culled the book down from " a much larger manuscript". I have nothing but sympathy for her.

Ok, I didn't finish it, but I really couldn't stand it anymore. I'm done.
