3.63 AVERAGE

Usually, even if they creep me or sick me out, I have to admit that King is a good writer.
It was kind of hard sticking to that slogging through this book though.

So many characters and yet somehow they all felt like exactly the same one.
It starts out as something interesting but honestly it fails fast.

I recommend any other King book to read but this one! :P
dark mysterious slow-paced

A very interesting concept, but the execution just wasn't there for me. Also, such a long book for no reason.

I’m struggling with a rating for this one. I think I may settle around a 3.5.

This book was a strange journey for me. I went into it not sure what to expect because it had two authors. I felt that the writing seemed “off” in some places and “on” in others. The premise was so interesting to me. It kept me engaged right until the very end but ultimately I was left unsatisfied. I had so many questions that never got answered. I feel like this book more than any other King book had a lot of commentary on the current political climate and gender disparities of today. While I can appreciate what the authors were trying to do, I feel like it got preachy towards the end. It was more of a tell us don’t show us approach which never sits well with me. Overall, I did enjoy the story. I know my review may seem like I didn’t. Not the case! I was caught up in the mystery behind all of the strange events that were occurring. I desperately wanted to know what would happen. I was rooting for my favorite characters to make it through. I would happily check out other books by this collaborative team.

As an experience: 4/5 stars

As a piece of cultural production written in the current political climate in the USA, I have some questions and issues with the text. I will probably come back and change the star rating to reflect this once I've had some time to digest and process the story.

The start of this book grabbed my attention instantly, which was great...except that I then struggled to keep going through the middle. This book had absolutely no right to be so long, and a lot of the middle section felt unnecessary. That being said, for the last third (or so) I did not want to put the book down. Everything happened all at once- death, destruction, emotion- and it did, in my opinion, more than make up for the slow middle.

I also felt little attachment to any of the characters, as there were just so many of them. I did however really like Evie, especially how ambiguous she remained, even at the end.

I would say that overall I did enjoy this book, and would probably have given it 4 stars if not for it being so unnecessarily long.

You know when two white men write a book about how the world would fair without any women (and, alternatively, how the Other World would fair without any men) it's going to be questionable. Stephen King's talent at writing raw pain kept this book going, but in the end the lack of a woman's insight showed. Also, of course, is the question of what happened to all the trans and/or non-binary folks... Don't expect an answer to that one!

I did enjoy this book but it had too many characters to keep track of. Not his best work and I wonder if its because he wrote it with his son. However, it was interesting and a good read.

I heard a lot of negativity surrounding this book. Was told by several people to skip it altogether. I don’t get it. I thoroughly enjoyed this one from the first page to the last. One of my favorite king books thus far.

One of King's best books in the 21st century, this book explores issues related to gender and the question of nature vs. nurture. I really enjoyed this exploration because it is a significant issue in modern society. The book is fairly similar to Under the Dome, but its relevance makes it unique.
