Ok so it didn't work out for me like I was hoping. It wasn't a "bad book" but I felt the author was a little heavy-handed with the gender roles. Like a magnifying glass was used on male flaws to the point of caricature but the flaws in women were glossed over or ignored completely.
For the entire last half of the book my reading experience felt like

I liked the premise. I loved Eve Black and the women's prison. The idea of "Our Place" was pretty cool. There were some moments I really enjoyed but not my favorite SK :(

In the last couple of years I have tackled several Stephen King books, especially this year. This was the first time I have picked up one that just came out. This was not one of my favorites. Not only are genders, in a way defined by gender norms, the story itself never really grabbed me. There were some devices, scenes, and characters that I really enjoyed but mostly the story fell flat. I do think that an adaptation will probably flesh it out a bit more and if done right could be alot of fun. I have never read anything by Owen King, but I couldn't tell who did what while listening to the audiobook. I think what worked and what didn't could certainly be improved in the adaptation.
This book has a rating of 3.79 on Goodreads and that shocks me. I throughly enjoyed this book. It was creepy and unique.

Extraordinaria y reflexiva aventura en el ya clásico estilo del maestro.
La historia tiene tintes apocalípticos cuando en todo el mundo las mujeres que se quedan dormidas son rodeadas de un capullo que las mantiene así, y si el capullo es roto, las consecuencias son terribles. En un mundo donde las mujeres están dormidas, el futuro de la humanidad quedará en manos de los hombres.
Como decía, este libro es otra aventura al estilo de "Needful Things" ó "Under the Dome", con múltiples personajes y muchas cosas pasando al mismo tiempo. Más que terror, es una historia de suspenso y aventura, con un trasfondo sobrenatural, muy propio de Stephen King. En donde se nota la mano de su hijo es en que el libro es una reflexión, bastante interesante, sobre el papel de las mujeres en las sociedad norteamericana actual, y la sociedad machista que prevalece. Y no sólo habla de las mujeres maltratadas o abusadas, sino incluso se analiza los roles de pareja, y cómo inconscientemente se puede hacer de menos a una mujer. Si bien el maestro siempre ha retratado muy bien a las personas, jamás había sido tan directo e incisivo en su crítica social.
El único pero que le pongo es que se inclina demasiado hacia la culpa masculina, y deja muy de lado la responsabilidad que las mismas mujeres tienen en que el status quo se mantenga.
De ahí en fuera la obra es impecable. Entretenida, aterradora, emocionante, interesante. Incluso el final es completamente adecuado ... aquí también se ve la mano de Owen, que no dejó que su padre se "volase la barda".
Indispensable para los fans del autor, y para quienes gustan de los temas feministas, y que no les importe que venga envuelto en una historia de terror de más de 700 páginas :)

Înainte de începe această recenzie, trebuie să menționez faptul că nu am mai citit o carte atât de stufoasă încă de la ”Harry Potter și Ordinul Phoenix” (în jur de 900 de pagini, dacă îmi amintesc exact). Pentru a face o incursiune în viața mea de cititor, asta s-a întâmplat acum patru ani. Deci a trebuit să găsesc motivația necesară pentru a mă apuca de ea. NU recomand sub nicio formă să lecturați această carte înainte să fi citit măcar două alte creații King. În cazul meu, am ”debutat” cu trilogia ”Bill Hodges”, iar apoi am citit ”Shining”. Încercați o primă lectură mai ușoară, ideal ar fi să începeți cu ”Cimitirul animalelor”. Oricum, cunosc oameni care au început cu această carte și au rămas plăcut impresionați.
Trecând la subiect, WOW! Nu credeam că voi putea termina acest roman în timp util. L-am cumpărat pe 29 februarie (ironic), am citit 80 de pagini din el și a rămas uitat în biblioteca mea până la începutul lunii iunie. ”Dinastia” King a creat o epopee care rămâne actuală după aproape trei ani de la lansare. Molima somnului afectează doar femeile. Acestea cad într-un somn adânc și devin cristalizate într-un cocon. Să le trezești înseamnă să mori. Pandemia se răspândește în câteva zile, iar provocarea femeilor este să rămână treze. Una singură este imună, și-anume Evie Black. Unii o protejează cu orice preț, alții o blamează și încearcă s-o ucidă.
Am spus că romanul este o adevărată epopee. Afirm cu tărie acest aspect, întrucât se urmărește evoluția a mai multor familii și personaje. Încă de la început avem o listă cu personajele și statutul lor, ceea ce este util la un moment dat (după prima jumătate). Deși aceste personaje nu se prea diferențiază între ele (aici se vede oarecum stângăcia romanului), ceea ce m-a atras în continuare a fost sintetizarea tuturor motivelor abordate de King de-a lungul vieții sale de scriitor. Animale fantastice care apar subtil în seria ”Turnul Întunecat”, protagonista cu ”Strălucirea” lui Danny din Shining și inteligența criminală a lui Mr. Mercedes. Toate aceste lucruri într-un singur roman!
Într-adevăr, părerile sunt împărțite în ceea ce privește construcția personajelor. Eu am urmărit îndeosebi doar două personaje: soții Norcross, Lila și Clinton. Lila este doamna șerif a orașului Dooling, iar Clinton este psihiatrul Penitenciarului pentru femei. Relația dintre cei doi scârțăie. Dar oare molima somnului le va împreuna puterile?
Aș asemăna familiile portretizate cu o oglindă cu două fețe. Prima față este lumea comună, în care foarte puține femei mai sunt treze, iar a doua este lumea ”Frumoaselor adormite”. Dar aleg să mă opresc aici cu explicațiile.
Partea puțin controversată a acestui roman o reprezintă tentele politice regăsite în fake news, un lucru nu tocmai deranjant. Dar un lucru care a iritat mulți cititori a fost promovarea unui stereotip, masculinitatea toxică. Bărbații sunt aici ori tâlhari, ori adulteri, ori indivizi care meriă să moară. Nici femeile nu au scăpat de stereotipuri, sunt jignite, stigmatizate și subestimate. Dar aici apare partea care diminuează stereotipia: aceste femei sunt puternice și luptă atât pentru familiile lor, cât și pentru ele însele. De la misterioasa Evie, la vulcanica Lila și îndrăzneața Michaela (o reporteriță îndrăzneață), acestea spulberă stereotipurile și demonstrează o ambiție de fier. Nu pot spune același lucru despre bărbații care adâncesc sensurile stereotipurilor, dar aici adolescentul Jared Norcross salvează imaginea creată.
Pot spune că domnii King sunt iertați, deoarece aici apare magia lui Stephen, aceea de a pătrunde în sufletul cititorului. Este imposibil să nu te identifici cu un personaj din întregul roman. Asta am observat de-a lungul vremii. Personajele îți scot ochii, atât la propriu, cât și la figurat. Scenele thriller mi-au rămas imprimate în memorie, iar întreaga filozofie din spatele cărții are un mesaj tulburător.
”Teama de inevitabil este mult mai rea decât inevitabilul în sine. E mai ușor să abandonezi lupta.” Morala este că trebuie să fim adaptabili și să acceptăm atât latura noastră întunecată, cât și tragediile din viața umană care ne schimbă ori în bine, ori în rău. De aceea acord acestei cărți patru steluțe din cinci.

1 star... I didn't finish this book but I couldn't read on any longer. I got to over 200 pages and decided to give up. There are too many plot lines and characters and I just didn't feel like it was worth it. The premise of the story sounds great and there were parts I did enjoy, but the majority I wasn't enjoying and was just bored. I feel awful giving it 1 star, but it just seemed like endless waffle... it's a shame as the first Stephen King book I read was The Institute and I loved it, but this was a let down for me. Life's too short to read books you don't enjoy!
3.5 stars. It took waaaaay too long to grab me, well over 2/3 in before I really really wanted to keep readingm. Them it definitely got interesting.
Wow! This felt like a long read. A good book and story but a long read. Many areas could have been edited and cut as I found some spots pretty long winded.
The number of characters in this story was a little overwhelming at times and ensured that I very often re-read a few lines just to grasp who was who and where I was in the story. No wonder there is a character list at the front of the book - not that I found it helped much.
I am still not sure if this was meant to be a book surrounding gender bias and gender inequality or a book around politics and white vs black. Either way, I have objections to portions of each.
Why should the women be “banished” to another world and once again be made vulnerable to the whims of men in the world that they left behind? Seriously, they were defenseless mummies and were snuffed out by men with ease. Does this mean that women are COMPLETELY defenseless no matter what and are controlled by men at every turn? And this book then serves to highlight how sad the state of the world would be without women? Do we really think that that is true? Yes, each gender has various ways of reaching conclusions and acting to achieve various ends but I doubt whether either of them would deteriorate to the point of non-existence (I am not talking about the procreating part but the basics of living and making a life). The abuse of women is very well highlighted in this book and I am proud that we all eventually find that inner strength to fight back and stand firm.
From the political and race point of view - I didn’t focus much on the political issues but more on the race issues but I am not going to say too much. Up until the point that it was clear that this person is white and this person is black, I had never actually thought much about each persons color. Because it was pointed out in the book this is when you think about all the racial connotations.
I enjoyed the fantasy and sci-fi slant to the book. The fairy / elvishness of Evie and her powers. The “fairy webs”, the Tree and the animals, especially the fox. I do have to say that I am little bit freaked out by moths now.
Maybe this book will stimulate thoughts of how each gender functions and we treat each other on a daily basis. I wonder if cocoons and alternate dimensions is the way we need to go before we treat each other with respect?
