Very brief biographical note about Butler's life and times that emphasizes the space race and civil rights movement.

This was a beautiful, poetic bio of Octavia Butler by someone who had to pleasure of knowing her. One it's own, the poetry Zoboi crafted is already profound, but the was she was able to tie-in and expound on the stories of Butler's life really enhanced the experience. One detail that stood out to me was the inclusion of some of Butler's childhood writings. Her raw talent shone even in her short stories, and her determination to not just be someone but famous author Octavia Butler was nothing short inspiring. At this point in time, I had not had the pleasure of reading Butler, but reading this bio has given me a sense of urgency to consume her work.

This was fine for what it was: a middle-grade book about Octavia Butler. I accidentally ended up reading it because a friend misremembered it to be a graphic novel (a format that interested me). The poetry did nothing for me, but the biographical piece piqued my interest and resulted in me picking up "Conversations with Octavia Butler", a compilation of interviews with her, which I am very much enjoying.

This was a very unique biography of Octavia butler with the story/background told in paragraphs and snippets expressed and told in verse. One specific poem really spoke to me about the impact of Octavia as a writer. It was really beautiful. All the snaps.
