I’ve read a lot of averagely written books lately. From the very first page of this book, I was blew away. The descriptions of character and background were astonishing, it’s possibly one of the best written books I’ve ever read.

The story follows the main character Mungo and his struggle through kidulthood, dealing with themes of masculinity, relationships and trust on a Glasgow backdrop.

I have no words to express my love for this novel. The way it’s written is so different and the descriptions that other authors would make so plain are so grounded and constructed so well. I genuinely don’t have any criticisms for this book…

It’s heart warming at time and then gut wrenching at others.

I’d really recommend this book!

Visceral with really touching scenes of tenderness. Authentic characters that are all very human with their daily woes and foibles Stuart had created a masterpiece with an intricately written story that will resonate with many. It covers a multitude of themes which I wasn’t expecting including the Catholic Protestant tribalism and the harsh realities of Thatcherism in Glasgow. Hard to read but emotionally could not be more accurate. You’ll love Mungo as much as Shuggie.

Great reviews and an interview with the very charming author persuaded me to pick this up for Pride Month, but if I’d known how violent it is I would never have chosen it. 15-year-old Mungo lives in a tenement in Glasgow in the early 1990s, where his father died in a gang fight before he was born, his mother is an alcoholic, and his older brother a hoodlum – in short, a time and place where it’s dangerous to be gay. Exquisite writing about such a vulnerable character makes for tense, painful reading, but once I started, I couldn’t put it down.

Olipas raju.
