I was hesitant to read this sequel  since book 3 seems to be on indefinite hiatus, but I enjoyed book 1 so much, and there was a sale, so here we are. Before DNF status, this book was coasting at a solid 3 stars, and only because the world building is superb. I like the cast at best, and the plot was dragging for me - I feel like the author had the romance plot in her head before forgetting there was a whole other political/cultural conflict waiting to be resolved and she rushed to wrap things up.

Summer's been in a "conceal, don't feel" rut since she was a young child, and I just didn't vibe with her ice princess vibe when it came to just Dilys. She can have platonic, yet emotional, connections with other people, but Dilys continuously gets the cold shoulder. He's a better man than me, because one rejection would be enough.

DNF for now, I might finish when I have the emotional bandwidth. Stopped mid 3rd act because, unbeknownst to me, there's significant sexual assault to the main FMC and I feel like the reviews I've read barely mention it. I take responsibility for what I read will do a more thorough job to check all of my trigger/content warnings, I just want to boost this fact about the book.

Could have done without the gratuitous sexual assault from the villains, yet there was still something compelling for me. I think it was the idea of distributing emotional load across partners and support systems, if a very fantasy literal way here. I also sympathize with the idea of being afraid of love and loss.

I LOVED THIS!!!! I am in AWE of the coruscate sisters! Stayed up till 5am the first night reading half this book! I can't beLIEVE we aren't, as a society, all over this book and series! CL Wilson's writing, world building, character dynamics and developments cater to all parts of me in a way nothing else does!

After finishing the first one, I wasn't sure how the story could go on but seeing it was another sister's story I wanted to anyway! I didn't think I could love another like Khamsin but I definitely did! I DO! I love how they are fearful and fearless and don't want to or wait to be rescued, they always save themselves! This is my favorite take on romantic partnership: be there to further their hapinness, not to be the source of it! Magnificent! I will definitely be thinking about them for a long time!

The first book in this series was good but this one was even better. There were several moment where I could feel the gut-wrenching sadness or stomach-churning nervousness being expressed, something that was lacking in the first. I like that we still get to see the characters from the first story quite a bit and explore the world and lore of these stories even more in this book. Some very dark parts and some very typical “everything always works out in the seemingly impossible ways” parts that may feel like a bit too much of a happy ending, but who doesn’t love a happily ever after?

I will say that it felt like
Summer’s assault trauma got glossed over way too easily, as did her feelings about her sister’s death.
And Dilys centers himself so much in conversations about Summer, it’s slightly maddening.

There are some weird modern concepts that are included randomly, plus some modern idioms that are distracting in the writing. Still thinking about how the FMC asked the MMC a question about genetics? (How do you both know about that?) I found some of the language to be really uncomfortable talking about other people’s in this world, it reads like colonialist, racist, old anthropological nonsense. Using words like “exotic” and “barbaric” to describe the MMC was very uncomfortable to read. The culture was clearly modeled after island cultures of the South Pacific & Hawaii and was treated as less than by the narration. The FMC’s attitude about their “customs” was also very xenophobic but the book’s sympathy for her views was giving “civilize the savages” vibes. I wanted to like the characters, but the racist tropes made it very difficult.
