the beginning was okay. but i didn’t like how quickly fmc fell for mmc. i didn’t like that they agreed to be married before the big secret was out. the ending of the investigation was a shit show.

Okay, so it's not great literature. I picked this one up on a whim, and you know? I enjoyed it. So what that the descriptions are hokey and the romance is of the insta variety? The actions and inner thoughts of the characters totally reflect the pangs of infatuation, anyway! I also like that Nora Roberts appreciates the appeal of a man smoking a cigarette (or several). I'm tired of it being demonized when alcohol is all glamorized. In this case, it lent an air of noir. The plot is predictable of course, but as in all romances, it's not the destination that you read it for, it's the journey.

2.5 stars. Quite a fun, light, easy read, but rather formulaic and predictable

It seems from other reviews that this is not one of her better works mostly because it's a bit old. However I found it quite pleasant to read. An decent half serious half fluffy read. Not a favorite but I liked it

We're in the middle of a heat wave where I live so I wanted a comfort read and this fit the bill perfectly. Classic Nora Roberts.

My guilty pleasure strikes again. Oh, to be a cynical, bitter FBI agent given an assignment to investigate the love of my life who runs a quaint family inn on gorgeous Orcas island. The fraud, counterfeit scheme, and smuggling plot was fine, but the real star of the show was the lovely and tender relationship that develops (real quick - like 48 hours) between the generous and open-hearted Charity and the cold and heartbreakingly lonely Roman.

What I didn't like:
  • Roman smoked like a chimney. Every other page he was lighting up and no one else did (which was odd).
  • In the very beginning, Charity is uncertain about Roman and his intentions/his past, and she mentions how he could easily overpower her and force her to kiss him (and potentially more). He also acknowledges this as true and although Charity was as passionate as him and wanted him just as much, this framing of their intimacy was troubling
