This book is a true story of growing up poor and black in the south, showing how hard it was for a black woman to achieve anything in life. Moody provides a clear depiction of oppression, and criticizes her own race for being completely inactive in the struggle for civil rights.

How have I missed this book and Anne Moody in my education? This should have been required reading in high school. If you want an easy-to-read firsthand account of sit-ins in Mississippi and Louisiana and the the March on Washington from a college student in the thick of it, this is the best book on that matter I've read. Highly recommend. It's long, but never drudging.
I just watched a documentary on the SoCal music scene in the 60s and to think that the Beatles and Beach Boys were starting off right at the same time as this book takes place- we truly live in at least 2 Americas.

I think everyone should read this book. I learned so much about the modern African American perspective in the South.

Coming of age during such a dangerous political climate is addressed well in this novel. Amazed that the author makes readers reaccess a famous speech by an activist mentioned later on in the book.
