Paris: The Memoir bonus chapter by Paris Hilton

See this is why I love memoirs.

I never would’ve thought to pick this up, mostly because I don’t often think of Paris Hilton. But this is a very interesting look into celebrity, fame, and the dark exploitation of children. Some of the stuff Paris talks about in this novel made me have to take a break. There’s a lot of different trigger warnings for this one, so I would say be careful. It’s not all glitter and sunshine. The very real and horrifying abuse, emotional, sexual and physical that is depicted can be hard to stomach. It definitely revealed as side of “troubled teen” industry that I didn’t know of before now. It’s also a very compelling book at early 2000s and the rampant slut shaming that occurred. All individuals are interesting and have stories to tell and I’m glad I read this one.

Paris is the story people have always wanted Paris Hilton to tell--the story of who she really is. In this revealing and thought-provoking book, Hilton will separate the creation from the creator, the brand from the ambassador, and show the woman who grew up with incredible privilege but was also trapped in a world of unreasonable expectation at a moment when young women were humiliated for sport in a gossip economy on steroids.

Since listening to celebrity memoirs is something I enjoy, I added Paris to my TBR even though I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. Everything I knew of Paris Hilton was from her The Simple Life era, a time when she was portrayed as a dumb, self-centered, privileged rich girl, who didn't have to work for anything. Yet what I got within these pages is the heart wrenching story of a young woman who endured endless trauma throughout her teen years.

This memoir is incredibly difficult to get through, simply because there is a lot of unsettling and upsetting content packed within its pages. Paris details ahead of time that the book will jump around, and it does. As a reader, this structure made for a disconnected experience, but as a human I completely understand why she has done so. It was obvious while listening that there is so much more to the woman than what the media has cast about her. This was a memoir that really made me stop to reflect on the disconnect between persona and personification in the mainstream media. A reminder that what we see in the media is a small snippet of a celebrity's life, and not a full fledged picture of a person's life.

There is definitely some disconnect between her immense privilege that is ignored. She name drops a lot and it is that really detracted from the powerful message she was trying to get across. With a little editing I think they could have easily been avoided, and made for a much more evocative read.

At the end of the day, I gained a respect for the woman she is and how she is using her platform to advocate for troubled teens and against the industry that caused some much trauma in her own life. An important listen for people wanting to understand her more.

"It's humbling to be reminded that no matter how big your life is, you are still a speck of dust that can be swept off this earth in half a second."

"Some friendships just have their seasons, and that's ok."

Paris Hilton is a lot of things to a lot of people, and after listening to her book I am pretty convinced that stupid is not one of them.

Paris's writing is sensitive, unflinching and honest, often to the point of self-deprecation. What she has been through is astonishing, but she doesn't use her past as an excuse and I so admire the way she owns her mistakes. The way she is using her platform to advocate for victims of the "troubled teen" industry, and to process her own trauma, is incredible.

There is so much more to this woman than the media has given her credit for, and I'm so glad I read her story, in her words.

I had played with the idea of giving this book a four, because, at times it feels a bit disjointed and Hilton places non-sequiturs that change the tone rapidly. But there is part of me that now thinks that is essential to her personality, which seems one that takes horrifying trauma and responds with an unaffected, lighthearted humor. It’s not what I expected, but pretty much nothing in this book is what people would have expected from a starlet derided as shallow for the past two decades. Anyway, what swayed me to a five star is that of the 50+ books I’ve read this year, this is the one I keep talking about all the damn time.

There were so many times in this book where I was just completely nauseated. I had to stop because it just seemed like things were so difficult for Paris; it feels like there was never a moment in her life where people didn’t see her as a symbol instead of a real person. Heartbreakingly, the stories she tells feel…remarkably common, despite her being from a world of extreme wealth or privilege. When she describes certain things she does as a teen, I wanted to scream through the book for her to run from the situation. But for teenagers and young people, they don’t know yet all the ways the world will attack them. It’s clear Paris is looking back on these situations with maturity and resilience.

The standout moments of this book comes from the middle section where she describes her time being exploited and abused by the troubled teen industry. It feels utterly repulsive to read but also every time she fought back or tried to escape, I could not believe that a human could have that much resolve. I literally found myself fist pumping every time she ran from these fuckers; she makes you root for her against all odds. I think her experiences at CEDU and other “schools” trained her to feel and show nothing in the face of grotesque criticism. A strange but effective preparation for the type of stardom that would come to her later.

I will not argue that Paris Hilton is beyond criticism, even still, but I think she’d agree. I also think what has been done to her in her youth explains (but doesn’t always excuse) so much of her specific approach to life. I highly recommend listening to this audiobook; this is meant to be heard from her voice.

As far as memoirs goes, this one is great.

Paris Hilton’s memoir took me by surprise. I was not expecting her to share her story with such authenticity and transparency. She softens her story by inserting soft, charming moments in her life into times of her life that are so so traumatic. This softens the emotional labor of the reader’s experience as well as reflecting Hilton’s ADHD though process. Thank you Paris for sharing so much of your life and for your continued activism and advocacy to end the troubled teen industry. That’s hot.

There are a lot of parts of Paris' story that are painful to read. The list of trigger warnings is long and I teared up more than I would expect to reading such a short book. It was extremely relatable, honest, and insightful, and Paris brought an optimism to it that I know must have been hard earned.  I'd recommend this to pretty much anyone.
