A perfectly fine book, but nothing to write home about. While there was no name for it at the time, I'm convinced the MMC in this book has some level of high-functioning autism. I enjoyed seeing how his mind works, and that he had family to rally against him during a time in which so little was understood. I appreciate that Edward had Georgiana who understood him as well, even though he was so afraid to be open and honest with her.

Even so, I thought things were too easy. The stakes were high, sure, but everything seemed to resolve with such ease, whether it be Georgiana's acceptance into society or Edward forgiving his father-in-law. This book also doesn't have a third act breakup, which is pretty surprising, all things considered. I also thought it strange that Edward had worked so hard to put together a literary gathering on behalf of his wife, only for it to be looked over--only mentioned but no scenes in the book. This was really important and showed the affection that Georgiana has said she wanted from her husband, and I thought it would be great to see the two interact with all the great writers, etc.

While each book in this series could be read as a standalone as they aren't interconnected, I would have loved a book about Georgiana's sister, Elizabeth, and her growing romance with the Earl of Montrose. Alas.

Yazar her şeyi sunmuş.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The title of this book should already give you an idea of what's to come in The Spinster and The Rake. While attending a ball at the Duke of Thornfield's estate, Miss Georgiana Bly decides to take a break in the library. Only, she doesn't realize that she entered the Duke of Thornfield's private library. After a disastrous ride outdoors, Edward Stanhope, the Duke of Thornfield, enters his private library to relax before attending the ball his aunt is hosting. When Edward sees Georgiana relaxing in his favourite chair with a book, he asks her to leave. Georgiana does not realize that he's the Duke and she refuses to leave. There is some banter and then BAM! They are making out LOL. To conclude, they get caught by his aunt, so now they are forced to get married even though they don't know each other beyond one makeout session.

This was a pretty good historical romance, if a bit slow-paced. The timeline is very tight. Right after Georgiana and Edward are compromised, their betrothal is quickly announced. Georgiana is reasonable and logical and understands that this is the only way to save her family's reputation. So she does not fight against her circumstances, but rather accepts her fate and makes the best of it. We spend time with Georgiana as she learns the duties and roles of a duchess and polishes herself before the wedding. At the same time, Georgiana spends time with Edward and while marriage may be unwanted on both sides, there is mutual desire brewing between them.
"If you must train me to be a better duchess, I must train you to be a better man."
Edward is on the spectrum and because of that, he has a reputation for being icy and rude. Georgiana doesn't see him as rude and icy at first, but at a certain point, she starts to see why society perceives him as cold and rude. I think the author did a great job developing that aspect of their relationship. Georgiana could not understand why Edward acted a certain way and Edward could not understand why Georgiana was hurt by his behaviour. There's a solid metaphor that the author incorporates to help both Georgiana and the reader understand Edward intrinsically. There is quite a bit of insta-lust happening with Georgiana and Edward in the beginning, but they do have a good relationship development.

The final conflict is spot on and fits the narrative perfectly. However, I am not 100% sure how it was resolved in its entirety. We know what the conflict is and we know the results of the solution...but how did we get here? What happened to the other families that were affected by this conflict? The resolution happened quickly and I am still confused about it.

P.S. Continuity error: in the beginning, the heroine is described as having dark hair, but it is later revealed that she indeed has blond hair, as depicted on the cover. Hopefully this continuity error is fixed before publication.

Would recommend this book to people who want a steamier pride and prejudice.

I don’t necessarily know how I feel about this book. On one hand I think the nerodivergent rep was good. As someone who has a similar set of things to Edward, I really understood all the ways that he was coming from. I enjoyed how he had to work really hard to learn how people feel and understand cues for things, even if he didn’t necessarily understand himself. And also it was nice to see him get an understanding wife.

All that said, the chemistry just didn’t feel like it was there. I felt like Georgianne was kinda bland as a heroine. While she started of fiery and determined she ended up just being biddable and boring. It felt like she just gave up after they got married and all her personality was zapped from her.

Story overall was okay but honestly would’ve been a 4 star if Georgianne was more fleshed out and consistent.

very sweet, i enjoyed the relationship build and the resolution of the conflict. loved the duke (the title does not make sense im sorry. he did not come across as a rake).

She was unique. She was plain. She was...herself without apology.

4.5 stars!

I will always be a sucker for a P&P inspired story, so when I felt a bookish slump creeping up on me, I immediately picked this one up. I'm so glad I took a chance on this author and story as I ended up enjoying it so much, even though nothing much in the way of physical action happened. A lot of this book's plot centered around the emotional growth and connection that eventually develops between Edward and Georgiana as Edward slowly allows Georgiana to see the real him while Georgiana gradually finds her place as the Duchess of Thornfield.

And although there was as much danger as I usually prefer in novels, I absolutely loved seeing the parallels between classic P&P scenes and the ones found in the book, especially the famous walk through the moors! The dialogue and chemistry between Edward and Georgiana was so well done, and I definitely want to read more by Eva Devon ♡
