such a strong conclusion to the trilogy!!
if outline was indulgence and transit was labour, kudos represents consequence. can say for sure that i love cusk’s take on feminism and existentialism
cries of “existence precedes essence” here, with intoxicating notes of femininity
extra note:
this trilogy as reminded me of “keeping things whole” by mark strand..
In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.
When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body’s been.
We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.

Rachel Cusk has the extraordinary ability of weaving a story from the stories of others, where the ordinary takes center stage and quietly reveals meaning in the most unexpected places. Her prose doesn't shout; it listens, observes, and illuminates.
Kudos is self-congratulatory without being overt, like the necessary anti-venom that by itself also has the capacity to harm. In a trilogy in which everyone carries a small piece of upper-middleclass western white-woman within them, even the mirror becomes self-aware of its own perspective. To violent ends.

Sorrow that has no cause will become a home that one will search for and in themselves and others for a lifetime. Sorrow that has no cause will cause displacement and a lifetime of searching on this quest will rid one of the intimacy that is peace. But being a woman will leave one scraping and scratching for life for one will never be equal and never climb a ladder without breaking as little sweat as a cis white man will. Identity is peculiar and someone I have always tried to change, yet perhaps ridding myself of perfection and sorrow will give me the identity I crave
