These poems are often ribald, intense, and moving. They were written in the Irish language by Ní Dhomhnaill and translated by two Irish poets. It is interesting to note the differences between the two translators. Of the two, McGuckian's are more sensuous and often funny. Ní Chuílleanáin has translated the poems with more classical and historical connections.

An interesting and important collection of poetry by Irish poets.

I think everyone should read poetry. I will never rate a book of poetry below a four. These poems were translated from the Irish and like many Irish poems I found some of them difficult. There are some that are easy, but some are based on Irish legend and myth that I just don't have the background in to read easily, and the language can be difficult, even in translation. Even with that, I really enjoy Nuala ni Dhomhnaill's writing very much. The poems are not long, which helps. The title poem is haunting. I'll keep these on my shelf to read again and again -- but not all of them.
