"My love for my mother is like an axe. It cuts very deep."
this book was very hard for me to get through at first, and I kept coming back to it months later until i got to the last third, then I read it all in one sitting.
the way levy explored the mother daughter relationship really resonated with me and left me feeling seen in a way that kind of scared me. the plot itsself was interesting but there was no real climax for me, it was when Sofia really uncovered her emotions - for her mother, father and ingrid, that I felt the book was where it was meant to be. idk i really really liked this book. but its not something that i would normally enjoy plot wise.

I found this book to be good not great. Where it excelled was in creating a sense of place - the scenery was incredibly evocative and dreamlike. The protagonist was interesting enough and the sense of mystery around her mother's condition was a decent hook to hang some broader themes on, but I felt it could have been more than it was. The writing was, however, very strong.

everyone knows I love a book with no real plot line, even better when it’s set in a hot country (or Japan ofc). Really easy to read, so incredibly well written some absolutely beautiful sentences that even I (as not someone who often picks out good writing) was blown away by, and was transported to the south of Spain - just really really enjoyed it, absolutely devoured it but would probably give it 4.75* as for me a 5* book I need to be thinking about constantly and I wasn’t really for this (although I did read it in 24hrs so maybe just didn’t have time to be daydreaming about it)
