Another good one from Angela Slatter. She is such a wonderful storyteller. This novella contains characters from her previous short story anthologies (world of Sourdough and Bitterwood books). I read this out of order but probably best to read the anthologies first.
My favorite quote: “… one cannot put an old head on young shoulders.”

A dark fling with fire and flinted eyes, this novella: it is dark and direct and I can see the appeal for many. There are a few too-facile sentences scattered here and there, along with the shell of cynicism garbed in characterological cloth, but on the whole the little tale winds and wends its way through blood-letting and life-saving until, at last, it ends: on the run. Fine enough.

I need to read more from this world, I fell in love with Angela Slatter's writing.

An interesting book about witches, femininity, the relationships between women, perception, and religion.
Not the best thing you'll read in topics like these but this is a solid novella.
The writing wasn't my thing but the story and world are interesting enough.

Leedlo.

This was a thought provoking novel that in very few pages established characters, setting and atmosphere impeccably.
I loved that this story is about solidarity and sisterhood. It showed the strength of women and our ability to survive. The horrors women lived through and had to endure and the less conspicuous though still ever present descendants of those issues that still permeate our society.
I became attached to the characters very quickly. I feared for them and cared for them and raged with them. The atmosphere and setting were so immersive and real. As whimsical as they were terrifying. The blend of the romanticised simplicity of old and the genuine hardships of the time was perfectly balanced.
If you like witchy books or cottagecore settings I would highly recommend this book.
