It was very very sad!

There are some books I don't know how to rate, even if it needs such a book. This is one of them. It tells a very intimate and brutally honest account of the life of concentration camp survivor. For me, retrospective self-evaluation is key: admitting that you stopped caring for others, that sometimes you even thought that the death of your father might make life more bearable requires great inner strength and acceptance. Moreover, it made me think of the precarity of human condition and the fact that none of us is actually protected from being exposed to bare life. Because it can happen, it is crucial to remember the past and stay attentive to the present. It's an ongoing project.

A near constant kick in the gut. Wiesel's plain and clear descriptions lay what happened to him - and millions of others - bare and gives no place for the reader to hide. After the first few minutes of the book and going on straight through to the last word, my throat was tight with emotion.
A book every American should have to read.

This book was just amazing. When I read it I did so for AP literature and I am glad that I did read it because it showed the deep struggle of what it was like for Wiesel during the holocaust. He struggled with his relationship with his father, he struggled with his relationship with God, he struggled with keeping who he was intact and not caving to the carnal instinct that the others did. This book gave me a better understanding of what things were like during that time.
