Something Wiccan This Way Comes by Michalea Moore is set in a dystopian time where we are riddled with pandemics, and only the rich can access a device to help be alerted to anyone with a virus.

Will Maren get the real killer?

Maren Lilienthal and Cyrus Harper
Maren Lilienthal is a young lady who has money and believes she is a witch. Maybe being an actual witch, it was very confusing to tell. She loses her entire inheritance by an investor bleeding her dry, and I guess running away with not only Maren's money but others as well. Maren comes home to be with her family, who gives her a job within one of the family's companies in her hometown, and she's fine again. I have to say that I had a hard time feeling sorry for Maren about everything that's happening to her throughout the book.

Cyrus Harper, unlike Maren, earned his money through his company, which happens to be doing great with its human virus scanning technology. I had a hard time liking this character as well. He bugged me whenever he ends a sentence with "yeah," which is often unless he isn't feeling happy. I also disliked how Maren says he is a fae prince because of his looks before getting to know him.

The Mystery

Maren and Cyrus end up having conversations with the victim that ended badly for them both. This means that Riverton is a small town; the police already knew, and that was brought to their attention. I had a hard time concentrating on the mystery as the victim didn't die until after the book was halfway. To me, the victim, Maren, Cyrus, and the killer all could be taken down a peg or two. The mystery also wasn't that well plotted. Also, it was easy to figure out who was going to die and whodunit. I understand it's the first in a series, but the world wasn't clear to me, and the character's issues seemed like champagne problems.

I received an advance review copy for free in return for my honest review.

Maren Lillenthal is down on her luck. The young socialite loses everything after investing her money with someone shady and has to return home with her tail between her legs. She chafes at the idea of living in Riverton, where she was always the odd girl out after her parent's demise. It doesn't help that she's a witch. The last thing she expects when she returns home is to meet tech guru and billionaire Cyrus Harp. Sparks fly between these two almost immediately, but will their new love be thrown off course?

While I enjoyed this book, there were things about it I didn't love. For one, Cyrus says "yeah" in almost every sentence. It was enough to drive me bonkers. I almost stopped reading more than once because of it. It wasn't a cute little affectation. It was honestly annoying and pulled me out of the novel each time, especially because it tended to be tacked on to the end of every statement.

I enjoyed the stuff about tarot in the book and found it fascinating. I wanted more about her practice and things like that. I also wanted more about her past and how it shaped her. We got glimpses of it and I found Maren to be a compelling character. I just wanted a little more.

I did think that the book took a while to get to conflict. Half the book is about how Maren lost all of her money and then met this tech guy and started a romance. Then we're thrown into the mystery and it's rather implausible how that all goes down. The police in this book are awful if their first thought wasn't to go through technology with a fine tooth comb. It's up to Maren and Cyrus to do that? It felt too pat and easy and silly to me.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I'd probably read the next one in the series as well.
