Angels Before Man

4.13 AVERAGE

rating: 4.5 stars

i love the journey of reading about an angel who was very much loved by God, became loved by everyone, learned to love himself he began to stray from the teachings of his creator, and ultimately became so corrupted and immoral after moments of feeling forsaken (and loving himself too much and became too prideful to the point he felt more powerful than god).
slow-paced

This should never in a million years be called "cozy" in any way somebody fix that deranged ai summary🤣

If it weren’t for the diverse baseline challenge this would’ve been a DNF. I ended up taking like a two week break from it bc of emotional turmoil and had to drag myself back to it and drag myself through finishing it. I have no clue how this has such a high average rating

At first it feels a little like The Song of Achilles, in the atmospheric writing and how vast and deep it feels. But god is it boring as shit at first. I just really got tired of Lucifer being confused and shameful and really just didn’t vibe with it

I saw another review that said it gets interesting at around 30%, which I found to be true as that’s around when Michael becomes a major player. I enjoyed Lucifer and Michael’s courting, for lack of a better word, and I liked the questions Lucifer raised about what God deems okay and not okay

But once the descent toward the fall began, it got so so messy and somehow boring again. The stream of consciousness writing was confusing and I skimmed it. The long paragraphs of dialogue interspersed with thoughts from other characters were confusing. A lot of descriptions were too vague and flowery and I wasn’t sure what was happening. And really it could’ve used some better editing, both to trim the fat and also just grammar and spelling fixes

I do think the unflinchingly horrific nature of the fall was done well. I can handle a lot of dark themes and this was pretty stomach churning for me

I really enjoyed this book. I always had a interest in angels and catholic mythology. This book has only peaked my interest even more!
