Ik val maar gelijk met de deur in huis: i cried.
When i started this book i didn't expect it to be a five stars, but all things together just hit the right way i guess.
I loved, loved, LOVED the found family! As i finally found my group of people in uni, this hit home and it made me especially happy for my secret wives :)
I could really relate to the feeling of just wanting to leave everything behind (which i basically did when i finally moved out of my village) when i think of the future i do not see myself staying in the netherlands at all, bc I feel like there are way better places to spend your life than here
Another thing i could really relate to was the anxiety, especially in trusting people. So it was really great for me to see Peyton starting to heal from her experiences and trusting people again. It reminded me that in the end people are nice, and it will be okay (probably)
Lastly, to see my 2 favorite languages be a part of this book, was the final straw 🫶🏻🫶🏻
And not only the mentioning, but even some words in russian and swedish 🥹🥹 (I cried at the "vi ses", and i have absolutely no idea why lol)
Okay thats it, i loved the book and now I want to go to Canada

as much as i loved sara barnard's older books, this one just didn't hit the spot for me. while i've always treasured her writing as being emotional, gut-punch kind of beautiful, i felt like this missed the mark. there were a couple of smaller moments that came close, but still barely scraped the surface.
i would've loved for the main character to explore more of her hurt over her past friend and boyfriend mistreating her for over a year, instead of focussing on one cruel moment. i feel like it would've also added a lot if she actually reconnected with the friend who reached out to her after the whole ordeal, instead of it just being briefly mentioned. now it just felt like a weirdly unneccesary addition.

meh but reminded me of the joys of making new friends while traveling
Protagonist, Peyton King, has been the target of taunts, teasing and bullying throughout her school career; she is lonely and looking for something to connect with. Fortunately she has her art that allows her to process the world surrounding her. At seventeen, she sets off on a journey that takes her from her home town in England to the western shores of Canada. Although her family does not approve of this, Peyton is determined to make a new start and meet some longed-for friends along the way. Readers learn, though flashback, about the types of bullying and self harm that Peyton must go through to be accepted by her peers. The tipping point and ultimate reason for Peyton's escape to Canada is revealed slowly throughout the chapters. Present day Peyton's journey is much more than one of escapism; she learns who she is and wants to be - she demonstrates true strength in her self by the end of the novel.
Author, Sara Barnard, brings together a likable cast of characters from all over the world; they are all travelers at heart, but the reasons for traveling are widely different. This is a quick read that even the most reluctant would be able to pick up and connect with.
