I absolutely adore this book. It is, without a doubt, one of the better ones I've read in my life. Explaining why I like it is a little difficult, however, since I'm having a hard time putting my finger on why.
I think it's a combination of the world that Boye builds up — the strange, cold future that scares me a lot more than some of the other dystopian novels I've read — and the absolutely beautiful use of language. Boye paints everything with a poetic surety and while the book doesn't always go into depth into emotions or events, it still gripped me as I read it.
I was so fascinated by the world, their customs, and how Boye wrote the characters that I can't help being in awe. It is fairly dated now, sure — dystopian novels are hardly anything new anymore and might not seem like much to today's readers — but if you remember when this was written, the impact it has is much greater.
In short, this is a lovely book that I highly recommend. It might not be for everyone, but I truly loved it and should probably reread it soon.

Such a wonderful story ohmygod I did not expect it to hit this hard, the whole world sucks you in and you feel as claustrophobic and tense as the protagonist. I LOVE how this was written, and having the main character be a complete asshole all the time, as the story slowly took apart his views and made him change into the same thing he feared so much.. ahhh amazing!!!! The use of the Kallokain, the social background of the story, the many deep thoughts and emotions that the story encapsules… man, it became one of my favorite books after my first read, amazing.

antiutopistický, ale pro dnešek příliš aktuální a realistický román z roku 1940 o totalitní společnosti Světového státu, v kterém neexistují city ani soukromí - občany sleduje policejní ucho (30 let před Procházkovým a Kachyňovým filmem) i oko (8 let před Orwellovým Velkým bratrem) a naprostá rovnost dosáhla absurdních rozměrů stejnosti (stejné platy, oblečení, dispozice bytů) - a v kterém "chorobní rodiče a chorobní učitelé vychovávají ještě chorobnější děti, dokud se chorobnost nestane normou a zdraví odstrašujícím případem"... (s. 136)
