This was an interesting book, to say the least. While many of us know of DeathNote, of L, Kira, and all that went down with that, there is always more to the story. This is the more. This is one of the few detective cases that we have of L before we knew of him in DeathNote. And what we find out is that L, Near, Mello, and there are more, are more interconnected that we think.

I love Death Note and I love detective novels, but I think this is one translation that just doesn't carry over well for an English novel. You have mysteries that can only be solved by knowing kanji and references to retro shoujo manga in a setting of LA...it would make sense in the original Tokyo setting of Death Note, but was just too hard to suspend my belief here. Most of the solutions to the mysteries felt very forced and contrived. I've read this twice, but still cannot give it a high rating in good honesty. I do love having Naomi as the main character, but seriously what was L doing!? He contributed nothing and served no purpose here.
I read this entire thing believing the Ryuzaki we meet at first was L, then I kept going back and forth because I Knew that they looked very similar (and how could she speak with L if L was hiding under the bed in the same room ?? )
anyway I felt like my own assumptions about this book just added to the plot twists. The ending was so solid.
I adored Mello’s takes on events and on L, more backstory about Wammy’s house is great.

Not the same as the good old Death Note but very enjoyable, and nostalgic, and overall I enjoyed it a lot.
