Some of the logic in this murder mystery sent my head spinning, but overall, I think I understand it fairly well. I think it's funny how Mello begins the narration by saying, "People don't like detective novels where the protagonist takes hours puzzling over the mystery; they prefer a genius who jumps to conclusions in mere seconds," and then we get several moments in the text where Naomi's languishing away in her own head, like, "Door knobs... Locks... Wara Ningyo dolls... Faces... Clocks... Clock faces... Time..." Sometimes her deductions made perfect sense to me, and other times, I never understood how/why she rules out certain options. Her logic when it comes to names especially baffles me, saying that there's a 1/676 chance (676 being 26x26) of someone having any given initial combination, without factoring in the most common names and the relatively obscurity of someone having certain initials. C.C. and M.M. are much more common initials, I'm sure, than X.X. or Z.Z., and to say that they all have a 1/676 chance of occurring feels like an obvious oversight to me.

Nevertheless, this light novel is a delightful read, especially the first half, when you're introduced to Ryuzaki and all of his eccentricities. Some of his most bizarre descriptions had me laughing out loud, and when I wasn't reading more, I was thinking about what might happen next. I knew a lot of spoilers going in, but that did not impede my enjoyment one bit. In fact, I think that I had more fun knowing what to expect and being aware of everyone's identity from the beginning--and there were still plenty of moments that caught me off-guard and surpassed my expectations. I finished this story wishing that there were more interactions between the characters, but it did a good job of wrapping up the main mystery and telling the story that it set out to tell. It's a worthwhile read for any Death Note fan!

well written and the twist is amazing. Once I started I didn’t want to stop. A true deceptive detective novel.

Gahhhh, the book cover is so pretty and the art is amazing, the mystery was a little stupid at times I thought but I adore Naomi and loved her getting a main role in this DN spin off novel.

"...Naomi Misora, I cannot overlook evil. I cannot forgive it. It does not matter if I know the person who commits evil or not. I am only interested in justice."
