I picked up this book because it had two of my favorite Death Note characters, L and Naomi Misora, actually working on a case together. It was wonderful.

This book is a spin-off of the Death Note manga series, explaining L's brief mention of having worked on a case with Misora in the past. I'll admit, despite my high hopes, I was a bit skeptical, having read other anime/manga spin-offs and coming away unimpressed.

This book did not disappoint.

While the book may seem a little slow to those who have a little less patience than I do, it certainly retains the cat-and-mouse feel of the original Death Note series. The clues are left at a maddeningly well-placed rate throughout the text. I often felt like Misora while reading it- that the clues were all there, and I was just failing to connect the pieces. The plot has a magnificent twist at the end that took my breath away as well. It also has a refreshing style to the prose, being both aptly written and narrated by the one and only Mello.

Where this story really shines are the characters, L, Naomi Misora, and the killer, Beyond Birthday (BB). This definitely shows you more of Misora's character and personality. Having been a character that died so early on in the original series, I felt (and was not alone in this) that Naomi had been somewhat cheated. She was clearly a very intelligent woman with great potential that had just been killed off. Here we get to actually see that potential at work, see her instincts and inspiration. Misora is sarcastic and witty, but also vulnerable in a way that tugged at the heart strings.

In short, I felt like this book gave L and Misora the justice they deserved, the justice the original series did not give them by killing them off- more so Misora than L, because she is the true "main character" of the book. We get a look at the intriguing FBI agent with such an untimely demise (but not Raye Penber, thank goodness; no one cares about Raye Penber).

The book even introduces an interesting concept about the Shinigami eyes.

Overall, a very worthwhile read, even if it went a bit fast at 174 pages despite the slow nature of the plot. I highly recommend it to any Death Note fan, and even any mystery fan (while there are references to Kira and the Shinigami, most of it is explained, so one who isn't familiar with the Death Note universe would not feel lost). A wonderful work for a wonderful series. And I don't just say that because I loved Naomi in this book.

Read it, and you probably will too.

the twist didn't get to me because of the spoiler, and the time misora took to string the clues together made me lost my patience -may be again, because i knew the culprit already, or not-, hence the stars. triknya cukup menarik sih. 3,3 lah

this is a story that is told by a narrator beyond the grave.

now whether that was intentional i cannot say, but in the interests of charity i will assume the author is aware the character he choose to narrate it should have been dead at the time of telling. either that or in possession of an ability to see the future which begs the question, why does he let himself die the way he does in death note?

you can see why i like the dead man talking theory better.

and hey, it explains how he somehow knows the details of what misora's thinking throughout the case!

i like to believe the afterlife lets you have access to all the information you'd ever want, i mean you've got to give all those dead souls something to amuse themselves with

which is also my explanation for the names of characters in the story, because believe bridesmaid?

yeah mello has to be screwing with us

but who cares though because naomi misora adventures! :D i heard when asked in interview why they killed her so early in the story ohba/obata replied that she would have solved the kira murders way too early in the story. i believe it! i would be very interested in further tales from the naomi misora case files. 3 stars

”If you agree with something, you must have sufficient reason to agree with it. If you disagree with something, you must have sufficient reason to disagree with it. However accurate, a deduction based on a fallacy means you have not defeated the killer.”

I had a lot of shocked pikachu moments reading this, and I read this in one sitting. I carved out time specifically, to finish it because I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down. I enjoyed it immensely.

Now, there are quite a few problems with it - but if you’re a fan of the original Death Note and you want more of L, more of the mystery and thriller - you will enjoy this, nonetheless. Though, it is imperative to have already read DN, because while this light novel is a prequel to the manga, the story is narrated and conveyed in a way that expects the reader to know what has already happened.

This was a great detective mystery, with quirky characters and great plot twists.

Though the characters aren’t the focus, it isn’t necessary as you learn about them in the anime. Even so it’s not like you don’t learn about the characters and they do feel like real people. The narrative focus is the plot and that comes to the books strength, with a complicated but interesting take on detective work and a continuation of the Death Note universe. Though this book isn’t without its flaws as you learn very little about L, who is one of the main players in this “detective-battle” and may be hard to pick up for new readers who haven’t already watched the anime. As well as that, a lot of the tropes, murders and aspects of this books may be alien to any demographic that this books isn’t specifically targeting. Those who don’t read manga, aren’t familiar with the series with aspects such as Shinigami’s what a death note is and what anime is. Other then that this is a great read for fans of death note and it’s more detective-side.
