The River

Gary Paulsen

3.5 AVERAGE

Nowhere near as interesting or satisfying as the first book in this series, but it had its moments. It just felt really rushed, disingenuous, and conceptual. Leaves a lot of loose ends. Lacks the subtlety and nuance of the first. I hope some of the remaining sequels are richer.

Ugh. So I tried giving this a chance after not loving Hatchet, but what drives me crazy about Paulsen books is they just end. Brian is back in the wilderness in bad circumstances and he's about to die and then, oh he's fine and the next thing you know he's at home with his mom. There was no resolution or rescue. In literally 3 sentences he is possibly going to die, things are ok, he answers the door at home 6 months later.

Easy read since it’s a children’s series, but written really well and has a good plot. Have been wanting to read ever since I read Hatchet in elementary school.

Gotta say, this book was better then the first one.

I listened to the audio book and have read it in 3 hours straight. Couldn't put it down

Quick to read. Middle reader boys would love it.

The best Hatchet book. In under three chapters a crank psychologist convinces Brian and his newly divorced mom that he needs to go BACK into the woods. BUT THEN — IN THE WOODS — THE PSYCHOLOGIST GETS HIT BY LIGHTNING. This sequel is beautifully dramatic. And thankfully there are fewer punishing acts of gods delivered by animals in this volume (if anything, beavers are a MVP!)

It took me maybe 2 hours to read this book. It was short but I enjoyed it. Considering it's called The River, I expected them to show more of their time on the actual river. I did think the writing was better than Hatchet, if solely for the fact that the author didn't use such repetitive phrases, but Hatchet was a much better story regardless. I wasn't blown away by this book, but I didn't dislike it either. If the book were just a little longer, going more into detail about their river journey or their rescue, I think it could have taken it to a whole other level. Overall, just a nice little read
