Another fantastic book that I raced through. Didn't like it quite as much as the first because it was so dominated by war. But an excellent plot and fantastic moral quandaries.

4 ⭐️ - This was MUCH more intense than the first two books (RQ and CC). I genuinely got choked up a few times reading the second half - so many moments of absolute heartbreak. Warfare, death/loss, politics, murder, torture, infanticide/violence towards children. It was a very emotionally heavy read.

My only complaints are minor.

One - there was almost zero “relaxation” in this book - the entire book had me on edge, and I would have greatly appreciated a few moments of tenderness or “filler” plot, just so I could catch my breath.

Two - the last chapter had a few typos and strange word choices that sounded made up (after a quick Google search, they ARE actual words, but they seemed goofy or in poor choice). It made the end of the book seem rushed or like an afterthought.

But overall - I am VERY intrigued by this series and will absolutey continue the series.

My favorite thing about this book was learning/meeting the new characters. While the struggles Mare went through do seem real, I found them rather tedious. Like many “second books” this was focused on setting up the next in the series. Still enjoying it but really looking forward to the next.

"I do as he says.
I kneel."

Kneel or Bleed. . Well Mare certainly did a lot of bleeding, caused a lot of bleeding and did end up kneeling. .

Wow. .

Ok, so the beginning was pretty epic. Had me worried for a few people.
Once at Tuck, things started to go slow.
Middle got a bit mellow, what with all the recruiting, but I was so eager to learn of the other abilities that Newbloods possessed.
Then it got exciting at Corros.
Then it got ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING at Corros.
Then things were getting sorted at Tuck and I was still sad.
AND THEN THAT LAST CHAPTER AND THE EPILOGUE

HOW DARE YOU VICTORIA?!?

Oh my god my heart and my head and my soul.

My poor, poor Mare. And Shade. And Farely. And Kilorn. And my precious Cal.

Two words for Maven: F##K YOU

Or: YOU MONSTER

Honestly there were times in this book that I just could not deal.

Very much a worthy sequel - even better than the "Red Queen".

Useless; Aveyard has already copied all the other popular YA lit, why not throw in Twilight (Breaking Dawn, to be specific)...pretty much the whole point of both books. I'm irritated that I felt like Red Queen was completely unoriginal and still read this. This book is going to be a bestseller (and I'm sorry for my part in that), and even just within the YA genre, there are so many better things to read.

Mare is one of the most annoying characters I've ever read about. I don't see any redeeming qualities in her...some characters can get away with being selfish and whiny, but she's just so unappealing.

As soon as I finished this book, I turned it into a giveaway on Instagram
