I'm just not into Hemingway's style of writing. I have read such amazing books the past decade and I find the conversations between his characters sorely lacking, this is another one of his books that I tried to find the meat but only ended up with potatoes. The main part of the story takes place in Italy, during WWI, the protagonist is an American who was an ambulance driver in the Italian Army and ends with him in Switzerland. What happens between the opening scene and the end is a hodge- podge of different and not so interesting scenarios. At least there wasn't any bullfighting in this novel.

I understand this is a classic and has a lot of very valuable themes although I didn't exactly like it it feels repeated it Hemingway's portrayal of women, and that the novel's style, while impressive, can feel emotionally distant and lacks warmth.
Not his best book. The romance was a bit cliche and too sweet after reading "The Sun also Rises." Also, it seemed like the ending was rushed and turned out quite Russian, which I would have enjoyed had it been in line with the flow of the rest of the book. I love Hemmingway, but this book was not his best.
