Reading this book again after many years and at a time when a European country is again at war makes me wonder why we never learn. Common soldiers and civilians are clear victims and war is brutal, it certainly has not become less so with the advances in technology since Hemingway wrote his novel. His direct, unvarnished style and copious use of dialogue serve to accentuate the brutality. To me the love story was secondary and I found the depiction of Catherine somewhat wooden, she was just too passive. Yet her fate serves to augment the pessimistic conclusion that we are all victims.
