The Alpha's Son by Penny Jessup

This reads as a fanfiction that was never edited to become a book. I enjoy fanfiction. I can imagine enjoying this fanfiction. The problem with copypasting a fanfic into a book is that it doesn't usually work. Most times, heavy edits are needed for a cohesive storyline to emerge. Not to mention the need to add world and character building to round it out.
Fanfics have source material.
Books only have themselves.

So deliciously cringe. I need the next one.

It's tough for me to rate this book, because I believe it is mismarketed: the writing, the structure, the plot, the characters, the depth, all of them are in the way you expect from a Middle Grade/lower Young Adult book.

To put it simply, this would be a 4-star or 4.5-star rating if the characters were aged 13 instead of 16 and I hadn't read the book with the expectation of reading something like e.g. The Extraordinaries in style, which is the more mature YA gay awakening books.

It is an enjoyable read nonetheless, following Max unwillingly attending a werewolf festival where they're supposed to find their mate, bickering with the jerky son of his pack's Alpha, the bickering evolving to something else, and then when he makes sense and accepts what he's feeling, trying to reach out to the rather scared Jasper. They obviously encounter obstacles in the form of enemies along the road and their path is bumpy.

As I said, the whole plot, dialogue and writing is more suited to younger characters and younger audiences. I wish the best to TinyGhost Press and Penny Jessup since it's the first book for both the author and the publisher!

I quite enjoyed it.

It is a twist on the classic Wattpad wolves and mate trope. This time, the alpha son finds himself mated to a boy.

I will be waiting for the next book, just to see how it goes.

Quick fun read. Predictable and full of clichés and typical romance tropes. But I enjoyed it.
I do wish there was a bit more of the werewolf mythos, but as a YA novel it didn't have to be overly complicated... I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Seeing such a low score, I was expecting a much worse book. This wasn't the worst thing I've ever read but it is... messy. It was filled with moments that I thought were super cute but also tropes that I hate. The first part at the camp would be a 5/5 if it were a novella. The middle part and the climax were weird but understandable. THIS ENDING IS AWFUL LOL. In future books I'm really hoping for deeper dives into wolf culture, maybe really explore that heteronormativity, and more emotional moments.

Spoiler
I hate the tropes:
- I'm gonna be awful to you so you realize how awful I am!
- We can't be together because you'll be in danger :(
- Zootopia climax
