I had low expectations going in and they were shattered. I was expecting a really one dimensional story but Bardugo's writing and word choice, especially leading up to the ending, surprised me to hell and back and. WOW.

Alina was not as bad a protagonist as you all made her out to be. Did I hate her in the beginning? I'll be honest, yeah, she had the personality of a doormat and that would still be an insult to the doormat. But as more of her began to be revealed, I began to enjoy her patheticness a but more.

And Mal? I am not a Mal apologist because Mal did nothing wrong. Ever. The end.

The characters were a bit two dimensional but I still managed to fall in love with them (Genya xoxo hit me up when you're as tired of the Darkling's bullshit as I am). And the magic OH the magic was delightful... Grishaverse my beloved.

"Mal," I whispered into the night.
"What?"
"Thanks for finding me."
I wasn't sure if I was dreaming, but somewhere in the dark, I thought I heard him whisper, "Always."

Was a difficult start if I’m honest, heaps of big new words relating to the universe. But as soon as I got used to them, it was hard to put the book down. I love fantasy stories with magic, and power and fighting. There were some moments when I did want to vomit with the romance side of things, but mainly I was able to keep it down. The author really painted a vivid picture of her world, and I am really looking forward to continuing on reading the series.

It felt really slow at the beginning. Though it got better closer to the middle, and really picked up. At the end, it just really fell flat with the loose ends, although I hope to see what happens in the next books. Worth reading, just maybe not the right time.

Zvědavost po zkouknutí seriálu mě nakonec přiměla přečíst si i knižní předlohu. Seriál se mi totiž moc líbil. Na knihu jsem slyšela jak velkou chválu, tak i značnou kritiku, takže mi to nedalo a musela jsem se do Ravky vydat osobně. Rovnou můžu říct, že jestli se vám líbila Alinina linka v seriálu, knížka se vám bude líbit taky, i když se toho moc nového nedozvíte. Seriál je totiž knižní předloze velmi věrný.

Můj názor po přečtení je, že to bylo jednoduše dobré. Ne nejlepší ani nejoriginálnější, ale byla to zkrátka pěkná YA fantasy. Kdo má se žánrem více zkušeností, pravděpodobně si hned všimne množství rysů a "tropes", které jsou pro tenhle žánr již dobře zažité. Ale jsou použity dobře a to se počítá. Pro někoho, kdo tenhle žánr ještě moc dobře nezná, je to dle mého názoru kvalitní vstupní knížka. Hlavní postavy se chovají uvěřitelně a úměrně svému věku a postavení ve světě. Nikdo (u koho to nebylo účelem QQ) mi nebyl vyloženě protivný, a to je ode mě pro tenhle žánr dost velká pochvala (zatím mi nevadil ani knižní Mal, na kterého slyším pořád spoustu kritiky. týká se to tedy spíš dalších dílů, nebo mi prostě jako postava nevadí?!). Systém magie, nebo v tomto případě "malé vědy" se mi líbil, hlavně jeho pevně daná pravidla a omezení, které dělají z kouzel v tomto světě opravdu spíš jistý druh umění. Prostředí a svět, který si bere inspiraci z carské Rusy, je příjemně osvěžující.

Nemůžu se nevyjádřit k otázce, která přijde v souvislosti s touto knižní sérií na přetřes téměř vždy. Líbila se mi více Griša nebo Šest vran? Četla jsem obě a musím přiznat, že Šest vran u mě jednoznačně vítězí. Griša byla ale lepší, než jsem čekala. Leigh Bardugo píše dobře, obě její série bych doporučila k přečtení. Mám pocit, že jde spíš o to, že Šest vran je svým tématem bližší mému vkusu. Parta kriminálníků, kteří se pouštějí do akce s naprosto nemožnými vyhlídkami je mým šálkem kávy zkrátka mnohem víc než romantičtější příběh mladé čarodějky, která se potýká se svým nově objeveným talentem a posláním, které je s ním neoddělitelně spjaté.
