Kuuntelin äänikirjana. Ihan fine kai (?). Toivottavasti täst tulee viel jotai. Kinda Shatter Me vibat niinku Alina ois Juliette, Mal olis Adam ja Varjo oli Aaron. No ainaki Shatter Me paranee joka kirja vähän. Taino en tiiä onko mahdollista voittaa Ignite Me ta? Anyways ihan fine.

Shadow and Bone was an interesting read for me as it is one that I came to after having seen the first season of the series by the same name on Netflix. Written by Leigh Bardugo, this YA fantasy novel takes place in a new world all the while feeling the familiarities of Russian culture and history.

Our protagonist, Alina Starkov, is a sickly orphaned cartographer on the front lines with the army. Her best friend, and love interest, Mal, is a tracker for the same military. The novel opens with the two of them being charged to enter the infamous "Fold" which is a shroud of darkness filled with horrendous and unimaginable creatures that divides the country. This world, while technically ruled by the King, would not be successful without the magical figures of this world, the Grisha. Grisha partake in the "small science" and are able to manipulate it to best suit specific needs. Some can create fire, others wind (which is essential for helping push their skiffs through the fold). Others are healers, and they are all led by the Darkling. An ancient figure who is distinguishable as being the only Grisha allowed to don the color black.

On her journey into the Fold, Alina's skiff is attacked and her power as the sun-summoner is finally unleashed. She is thrust into a new world of learning her abilities, understanding what the history of the Fold and the Grisha are, and coming to terms with her new reality.

This is one of the few instances where I feel the show did a better job at fleshing out the characters than the novel. While the characters written by Bardugo are fine, they are more nuanced and interesting in the series (for which she is a producer).
While I will continue with the series, I understand that this book will not be for everyone. It is a very quick read for older readers and could be a good entryway for younger readers into the worlds of fantasy.
