I always enjoy trying out new authors. This was my first book from Nelson DeMille. The mAin character was so hilarious. If he said half of what he thought, no one would like him or ever speak to him. The storyline was addictive. I Enjoyed the build up to the climax of the story. It kept you yearning for more. It was one of the most enjoyable book club reads this year

John Sutter has returned back home to the Gold Coast, after being away for three years. It seems already though news of his arrival has made its way to the Bellarosa family. It’s like John is seeing an old ghost in Frank Bellarosa’s son, Anthony. Anthony has a plan to try and convince John to head back into the dark, gritty world and work for the Bellarosa family again. As if that wasn’t enough, John runs into his wife Susan. Susan and John are willing to give their relationship second change but will John be able to forgive Susan for her infidelity?

Three years ago, Susan took a lover. Her lover was none other than Frank Bellarosa. Something terrible happened and Susan ended up killing Frank. Now Anthony would like nothing better then to exact revenge for his father’s killer.

John was just this normal guy who is trying to piece things back together in his life. I think because I felt sorry for John I felt a better connection to him then to any other characters in this book. I really thought John deserved someone better than Susan after what she did to him. Some of the comments that would come out of Anthony’s mouth were so cheesy they made you just want to roll your eyes but at the same time you couldn’t help but find them funny. Don’t let the fact that this book sits at six hundred and eighty-eight pages scare you as it is a good read. The Gate House is the long awaited sequel to The Gold Coast. Though I had not read The [b:Gold Coast|33813|The Gold Coast|Nelson DeMille|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1168465640s/33813.jpg|1603282] I do believe that The Gate House will make fans happy as well as being worth the wait. Mr. DeMille really knows his stuff!

This is the longest book about nothing I've ever read.

This book heavily references The Gold Coast. By that I mean, almost every page makes mention of something from The Gold Coast. Susan's shooting of Frank B is rehashed 50 or 60 times. John's 10-year absence and sailing world tour is mentioned several dozen times. Each new character in the book comes with a thorough rehash of past events.

There was very little plot, and until the last 50 pages, no action at all.

Huge chapters are dedicated to John and Susan fighting with her parents for her share of $100M the parents control, but didn't earn. It's multiple generations of trust fund babies arguing about who will control the money for future generations. None of the characters were very likable, with the exception of the police and FBI agents.

I love Mr. DeMille's writing and have enjoyed 10 or 12 of his other books, but his heart really wasn't in this one. Save yourself and read one of his others.

OMG, this was so very terrible. I can't think of a worse book.

I hated the protagonist's arrogance and offensive sense of humor the entire book. But the plot was even worse.

There's a good novel in here somewhere, but it's 150 pages too long and succumbs to too many sequel cliches.

Another possibly great book tempered by the lack of editing for tightness and maintaining momentum. The concept is fantastic: a continuation of John & Susan Sutter's involvement with the Bellarosa family. This time, the vengeful son who wants revenge on Susan killing her father ten years earlier.

John Sutter, her husband, is the MC and a solid protagonist. But he's a bit too much like a few other DeMille MCs; most notably John Corey. Too much a wise-ass who sometimes gets in trouble with his mouth and stubbornness.

All that aside, the main drag was the middle section of the book, which dwelt endlessly with the drawn-out funeral of the long-time family servant. She was important only for the bombshell deathbed letter she dropped on John Sutter as the catalyst to the ending. Yet, the interactions during her days-long wake, funeral, and burial take up about 25% of the book. Much of that could have been condensed with no loss of information or intrigue. So shame on the editor for not doing a high quality job, the kind of quality needed to compliment a DeMille novel.
