Star rating subject to change. I need to sleep on it a bit.

I really liked this one. The character development happened at a nice pace, giving you time to breathe before falling in love with anyone. I really liked the parallels between the old “Alex” and the new “Alix” and the twist when she runs into someone from her past who sees her for what she is. I also loved the last chapter, where we learned that she knew the truth about her breakup, but instead decided to cling to a lie she’d told herself. I think it was both relatable and cringey.

Normally, something in me tries to like the characters in the book I’m reading—they become friends I have to say goodbye to at the end. But I have to say, this goodbye wasn’t hard at all. Alix and Kelley fight for Emira, and I ended up hating both of them. I loved reading about the friendship between Zara and Emira. Seeing all the different nuances of racism hurt in all the ways they should.

the characters and their motivations feel realistic. comparing different ways racism and implicit bias show up and questioning which is more harmful is really interesting. appreciated the high school drama
