Berserk has undeniably changed and honestly, it had to, given Miura’s passing. Still, this volume hits, especially those last few chapters. They're bleak, they're brutal, and they don't pull punches.
The artwork feels noticeably different. I truly miss Miura’s distinctive, gritty style, but Studio Gaga’s illustrations in this volume are still incredibly detailed and striking. Even so, the pacing feels noticeably rushed compared to earlier volumes. It’s clear that things are moving faster now, perhaps a bit too quickly at times.
I’m really curious how Kouji Mori and the rest of the team will carry Miura’s vision through to the end. Above all, I just want to see how the story concludes. I want to see the ending Miura had imagined for all these years.

The first volume since Kentaro Muira passed away, and it feels like a transition. This volume is incredibly sparse. Griffith makes an appearance on the Elf Island, Casca is taken back to the Band of the Hawk, and Guts has a mental breakdown. He's at his lowest point since The Eclipse. Really curious where this leads in the future, hope to see an ending for Guts and Co.
I had some major issues with this volume. The little dialog we get seems poorly translated, partial words, sometime just the end of words, weird. Maybe it was the digital copy I was reading through Hoopla, but the art was shoddy and not crisp at all, it made my eyes strain. And finally, again maybe a Hoopla issue, the format was all wrong, as a man's you read right to left, then turn the left page, but this one you read right to left but turned the right page. Very odd reading experience.

Berserk Vol 42
By Kentaro Miura and Koji Mori
Book 22/250
Genre: Fantasy, Horror
Format: Digital, Manga, ARC
Pages: 192
Published: March 18, 2025
Rating: 9/10
Art: 9.5/10
Horror: 👻👻👻👻
Collects Chapters #365-373
This is a hard volume to review. Volume 42 is the first collection of Mori’s chapters after the passing of Miura. I know a lot of the fan base was worried about this change and how that would affect the series, and I was definitely in that camp. With respect to the art, I have to say that Mori does a very good job at mimicking Miura’s style, while adding his own flare. The artwork is nearly just as good as Miura’s, but with a slightly different feel. And I was really impressed by Mori’s work. I will say that for some reason the publisher included a watermark on this ARC that makes the book nearly un-readable, so I did have to check out the originals online.
Spoilers up to this volume. This picks up immediately after the events of Chapter 364 with Griffith manifest on the Elf Island. And as you’d expect, what follows is Guts attacking Griffith. The fight is done well and has fascinating implications for future chapters. The later half of the volume deals with the fallout from this battle, which Mori handles very well. The character work seems on character (for lack of a better word), and Mori really plays on the heartstrings much like Miura.
After this volume I am going to try and stop the comparisons between Miura and Mori’s eras and instead focus more on the actual story itself. Though I feel it’s safe to say that Berserk is in good hands.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟔𝟓. "𝐋𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧"
Poor Casca💔
That was the shortest chapter ever!
The art is stunning btw.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟔𝟔. "𝐄𝐲𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐦"
I spoke too soon about the art. They did well in the previous chapter but it went down hell in this one — it varies from panel to another. No one can match Miura’s skills after all.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟔𝟖. "𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐬"
Now that we don’t have Miura, I’m appreciating his art more. Not as if this one is bad, but it’s definitely not the same.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟕𝟑. "𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐝"
And just like this I learn that the series is not finished yet :)

(Log for the entire Berserk manga up to chapter 376)
Took me about a month of on and off reading before powering through over 100 chapters in the past few days but I finally caught up to Berserk, and it's as wonderful as everyone says it is. Godlike art, fantastic characters, a plot that's engaging and a villain that's so hateable I had to pause at certain moments because of the rage I was feeling.
The use of SA in early arcs is something that got obnoxious, and this is something that the author reportedly regretted. You can tell, as once Berserk started refining itself it only gets better.
