So I've started my Darcy Coates journey and I found that this audiobook was readily available through Libby. I jumped on it because today was the perfect day to listen to an audiobook while working.
This was entertaining, it had some good twists, and most characters were likable. I would say it's a fun mystery with paranormal elements more than a horror story. I never felt horror, but I did feel thrills here and there, and it maintained my attention.
I'm reading The Haunting of Ashburn House by the same author, so I have another reference for one of her haunted house stories. Though I'm still not done with Ashburn House, I can say I like it better than this one because that one is, indeed, creepy and scary.
I never once felt afraid listening to this book, mostly because it never seemed that the MC was in actual danger and it didn't feel like he was ever actually scared himself. I think it's because most of the paranormal characters were good and helpful and because this was more about unraveling a mystery than anything else.
Overall, it lacked tension and truly horrific moments, but it was a good time and I enjoyed it for what it was.

This book started out strong and creepy and was headed for 5 stars, but then towards the end and wrap up it got weird and lost its shine. The whole storyline was golden until the author brought fantasy into it and veered away from the paranormal.
Who doesn't like an empty Manor with rules you have to follow to stay safe and payment upfront? Seems easy enough, right? Especially when you really need a job AND a place to live.
1. No strangers are allowed onto the property.
2. Do not enter the tower.
3. Do not leave the groundskeeper's cottage between midnight and dawn.
4. Draw your curtains.
5. Keep the door locked.
6. If you hear knocking, do not answer it.
My rating for spook is 👻👻👻.
