Very strong start, I immediately connected with the main character, and the setting is impeccably moody.
The conflict, however, gets frustrating.The main characters' flaws of believing certain characters and being way too trusting passes what I think a typical reader would consider acceptable. It's soap-opera levels of loyalty to a certain character that does not deserve it in anyway, and it makes the climax feel ENTIRABLY preventable.

What a fun take on a ghost story! This is my second Darcy Coates book and I really enjoyed them both. This story contains a lot of unexpected twists and turns and really left me wondering how it was going to play out. The plot is daunting, the characters are admirable (with a few very notable exceptions), and the stakes get pretty high. Looking forward to exploring more of Coates works down the line!

This book has a good spooky vibe, and I love the creepy haunted mansion-like setting. I prefer paranormal type stories and this one breaches beyond that more into the monster realm, which is not as scary to me. I preferred another book I read by the author that was much more scary. The plot line is still interesting with a spooky mystery that gets solved and sweet ending. But if looking for more spine tingling chills, I personally don’t think this one is as scary as another I read.

I personally love Darcy Coates because her books are straight to the point and the story line is always so different yet so similar. I usually read her books within a day or two because it's so easy to read and it's suspenseful. The only thing that sometimes turns me off is with a some of her "haunted" books the ghost somewhat becomes a monster and I prefer to not read about monsters because it seems less real and harder to imagine. BUT her story line or the reason behind the haunting is always so intricate and I love it.
