3.24 AVERAGE

"You've got to be sharking me."

Oh wow. I expected this to be bad from all the negative reviews and the low average rating but I didn't expect it to be this bad. The writing in this book was awful and so juvenile. Lots of weird silly phrases to stand in for cursing and just all around immature dialogue and situations. The entire point of this book is Mera's mission to kill Arthur but it turns out super insta-love between them of course. Plus no one else had found this lost heir and... Mera found him instantly? The book is short and I get it wanted to get there already but you don't have to rush literally everything.

Funny how Mera's entire motive was how she wanted to rule all by herself and prove to her father she could. And yet she instantly falls in love with the first boy who is nice to her and suddenly they can't stand being apart (despite how they met like, three days ago.)

As for the art, I can't even say I liked that because I didn't. A thing I really liked about the Aquaman movie (don't @ me, I don't read comics often and that was my biggest dose of Aquaman lore) was how weird it was under the sea- with mermaid people and undersea creatures and different clothes, buildings- all of that. The clothing choices of the people underwater in here were so awful and super basic. Plus their normal looking buildings down there were weird and out of place. They are underwater and a completely different kingdom, what is this normal human stuff?

Not to tie back to the Aquaman movie again but the colors in that were crazy colorful and gorgeous. This cover even has bright colors but there is none of that in the actual book. All of the colors were super washed-out, dim, and even foggy looking at some points (except maybe Mera's orange hair) and it was so ugly to me.

Shark this.

Gave a nice re-telling of Mera's origin story, the art is stunning and fits the story perfectly!

It was really good. If you like superheroes, books about superheroes, or graphic novels about superheroes then you might like “Mera: Tidebreaker”.

Really loved it but this should have been a throuple, and you can come for me but I just know those 3 characters complement each other perfectly and their couple dynamics could be so entertaining to read about. Oh well, to Ao3 I go👌

This was good! Not spectacular by any means and totally predictable but I enjoyed it!

I like the overall story. There were some odd transition points that weren't clear, and some of the dialogue could have been improved. I kind of wish this wasn't just a stand alone.

{My thoughts} – I have honestly read through this book three times now and to me nothing has changed. It is still the same super facst paced love story, that more or less makes me feel like they are star-crossed lovers, but not entirely.

I have to admit I didn’t enjoy reading this book at all. I don’t know any of the background history of the characters. I honestly don’t get into the super hero world all that much.

I feel like much of this book didn’t make any sense at all. There was a lot of fight and make up, then repeat. There was a lot of fast paced how’d that come about, because it’s not explained in a means that would help it to make sense. Then there is the how are they in love, when from what I read, they probably shouldn’t even be friends.

It's hard for me to really pin down how I feel about this, since Aquaman and Mera are a fairly sizable gap in my DC knowledge. Since this is set as a sort of origin story of the characters, though, maybe that's perfect to give this an unbiased opinion.
Overall this is a pretty fun book. The art's pretty good. The story line, though not exactly anything fresh or overly original, worked well enough to be compelling. There are places that things break down a little-- some of the terminology used in Xebel didn't parse well-- for example, it seems weird that an undersea nation uses "douchebag" the same way Americans may-- but other than a handful of issues along those lines, and a handful of instances where people totally change their minds about big important things in a couple of lines of dialogue, this was pretty solid.

I absolutely loved the art of this graphic novel. I also enjoyed the story and the characters. I love Mera as a warrior princess and Arthur as a gentle kid who loves people and animals. It was just too short! I have so many questions that remain unanswered because there was no sequel to this. It had so much amazing world building and character development that the ending felt rushed and sudden.
