I really enjoyed the simplicity of the art style in Roots and found the writing OK, all in all it was a fine way to pass an hour or so of reading time.
As many have pointed out in their reviews, the author seems to lure her readers in under false pretences. We go into the book expecting a story of a woman who goes to Ireland in search of her family history after her marriage breaks down. What we get instead is a story of a marriage breakdown, a trip to Ireland where she meets up with a guy she met online and the love story that develops between them. Their love story is sweet (if a little dull) but the bulk of the comic is dedicated to their relationship with very little time spent on the genealogy project I was expecting. Perhaps this comic should be reissued as a love story rather than family history so readers' expectations have a better chance of being met.

It was a quick read to fulfil a prompt for a reading challenge. I liked it but had hoped for more about her ancestry, but understandably she wasn't able to find out more about it, at least in the period of writing this graphic novel. I'd give this 3.5 or 4 out of 5 stars. I did enjoy it but I think I'd prefer it if it were a little longer or had more depth/detail in places. But it was sweet and I loved the concept (using the different meanings of "roots"). It's a nice quick read for those who like lighthearted autobiographical comics.

Once again I find myself having an unpopular opinion. This was really cute and it brought a smile to my face. Right now I don't know to rate but it's more than ⭐⭐⭐
