I had such high hopes for this one. Two friends whose taste in books I usually trust and agree with really loved it. It had an interesting premise and a great start. The author's writing was excellent. But it was so devastatingly boring after about the first quarter of the novel. It felt like there was no rising and falling action to the story; it just went and went and went at the same unfortunate level until it ended.

I so looked forward to this book, but it just never seemed to reach the potential of its synopsis. It took far longer than a book of this length ought to take for me, especially during my time without kids home. There were often small things that I thought meant I had missed something and had me halting to try to figure out what I missed, but was explained 3 paragraphs later. It finally picked up some steam in the last 70-100 pages, but then it was a bit too wild to comprehend

which might have been intentional, to match the train itself, but it seemed like the message was trying to be that train was trying to come into its own and had its own control, and the book never got back there.
