it was kinda meh for the entirety—basically it’s “annihilation” meets “wool” and set on the polar express. but the epilogue was fucking stupid. what the fuck did that even mean.

This one ended up falling flat for me, I really enjoyed the first 75 pages, the premise, the genre bender (historical fiction and fantastical realism). This felt like a book that was supposed to make you think but I couldn’t figure out what symbolism or deeper meaning it was getting at. The secrets and motivations of each character were revealed early and then it was all like a trip on shrooms, without any meaning for the second half.

This book was....different. The concept was neat, and I enjoyed the characters, but I didn't really understand the deeper meaning, and while I expected to feel suspense, the climax was very anticlimactic. Overall I'm left feeling disappointed.

Cute. A mix of Snowpiercer (the movie, not the show) and Annihilation. I loved the historical context but it was really well interwoven with the fantasy/horror elements. I would have loved some more answers about the Wastelands themselves but I think the exclusion was intentional for a feeling of alienation and unknowability.
