I really enjoyed this great collection of short stories - it's quirky, slightly surreal and great fun. I particularly loved the way characters kept turning up in different contexts and different stories so the reader could see things from different angles. The character Rhoda who turns up in most of the stories is simply amazing - I loved her! I'm now definitely a Gilchrist fan.

Read the first four stories, only liked one (“Madison at 69th, A Fable”, about grown kids trying to prevent their mom from getting a face-lift; funny and sweet). I haven’t read Gilchrist before, and the 2/4 stories involving Rhoda (I guess one of her established characters) I really didn’t like. All stories heavily involve Southern culture, usually in the 80s-90s. Also themes of aging and love while aging, family and generations. The writing style is very conversational:
I woke up in a really good mood. An orgasm is an orgasm and it’s a hell of a lot better than Xanax.
