This is a good story although I am finding that alot of his stories seem to be the same. John Puller is from CID and he was sent to a small town on his own to investigate the murder of an army officer. He has no backup only help he has is the local police. The story flowed will and was a good page turner but I don't want to follow the character on another adventure. I am not saying it was a bad story just a story that I don't want to repeat.
I read one of Baldacci's books years ago, and wasn't really thrilled by it, so I never went back to him. Recently, I saw a review of this one, and it looked intriguing, so I checked it out from the library. It was actually pretty good. I may have found another series to read, though this one only has 3-4 books in the series. Apparently Baldacci isn't afraid to end a series when he runs out of ideas.
John Puller is a CID inspector, reminiscent of a more law-abiding Jack Reacher. He finds himself in West Virginia trying to figure out who murdered an entire family. Eventually, his brilliant brother, in prison for treason, takes on a pivotal role in solving the mystery. I'm looking forward to finding time for the next one.

Norul de cenuşă care învăluia şoseaua îl făcu pe Howard Reed să oprească duba pe marginea drumului. Praful de cărbune îi invadase plămânii. Coborî din maşină şi începu să vomite pe iarba îngălbenită şi arsă. Tuşi violent şi scuipă de câteva ori, iar după câteva secunde îşi veni în fire.
Reed se urcă apoi în maşină şi apăsă pe accelerator, pornind în viteză pe străzile întortocheate, pe care o mulţime de basculante se deplasau cu viteză redusă, împrăştiind în aerul din jur particule fine de arenit negru, ca nişte confetti aprinse.
Aerul era încărcat, de asemenea, cu bioxid de sulf, pentru că lucrătorii dăduseră foc unui morman de deşeuri de cărbune, cum obişnuiau să facă în mod frecvent.
Elementele rezultate în urma arderii aveau să se ridice spre cer şi să reacţioneze cu oxigenul, formând trioxidul de sulf, apoi acesta urma să se concentreze în moleculele de apă pentru a crea un compus rezistent, care avea să cadă mai târziu înapoi pe pământ sub formă de ploaie acidă toxică.
Niciunul dintre aceşti compuşi nu era benefic pentru siguranţa mediului înconjurător.

The main character of this novel is every masculinity-obsessed man’s wet dream. An army man who is always prepared. He never makes a mistake. Can read people and never get attached. Flies solo and is incapable of trauma. Could fight off 100 men solo if need be. Can figure out Red Herrings without any context.
Not only was all of that problematic, but the result/ending of the book was not... cumulative. It came out of nowhere, smacked the reader in the face, and left one wondering what the point of the first 300 pages were.
Possibly filler details to pump out another edition?
The 2 stars are for location. Literally. Have yet to read a book that discusses coal mining and WV. The author gets no points for the female lead, because she was 100% ditzy regardless of her position and was merely a foil for Puller (the main).

The start of this "Puller" series was great! I loved how it told more of his individual story of how he became who he is. I can't wait to read the next in line. Puller is a quick thinking CID agent that does not disappoint on the action side. This storyline was really good and had a huge twist in it that I definitely didn't see coming.
Light, easy reading....kept me engaged. Good attention to details. Enjoyed it.
3.5 stars. Reminded me a lot (maybe too much) of the Jack Reacher novels.
