Started out super interesting but got so slow in the middle. It was excruciating to read but it’s actually kind of genius if you think about it. The reader experiences the same frustration, uncertainty, and even rage that K. goes through. It’s all so senseless. There were also some genuine laugh out loud moments in this. Kafka’s writing style is so mundane and depressing it circles around to being hilarious.

I'm not quite sure what to say. How does one review something like this? I feel like I'm standing at the foot of Michelangelo's David and asked to give a comment. "Uhm, it's very nice."

For a pitiless, dark musing on the utter pointlessness of existence, I found myself laughing quite often. Is that a defense mechanism? For such a short book, there is just so very much packed in that it is hard to process. The lawyer's first speech is breathtaking. Kafka may very well win the prize for longest paragraph. The artist, the priest, the deputy director. One dimensional characters that contain entire worlds. The mind boggles.

Perhaps it's the libertarian in me but I couldn't help thinking early on that K should have just ignored it all. Kafka anticipates my objection, however, and it quickly becomes apparent that EVERYONE is involved. The court is not of the world, it IS the world. And the world does not suffer ANYTHING.

I need to read something lighter next; something light, cheery. Maybe Night or The Black Book of Communism.
