The last of the Nevernight Chronicles. This took me a long time to get through but it was not a slow read by any means. I really liked this one and was very happy with how the series ended. All the relationship growth was excellent and the plot was fast paced and interesting. While the series as a whole may not be perfect I still really enjoyed it and would definitely read it again in the future. I fell in love with so many of the characters and get adequately invested in their fates through the novel.
My main critique for the entire series is the leaps in Mia’s luck. I don’t care how good someone is this girl has dodged soooo many figurative bullets it borders on un-believable. That being said I am happy not focusing on that and enjoying it for what it is.
Also, while many do not like the footnotes I enjoy them and was amused by the authors/narrators comments. I also liked the book in the book moments creating this world with blurred lines between the novels reality and our experience with it.
Overall I give the final novel and the series as a whole 4.5* and would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

a good ending to the trilogy but not great. Kristoff has created an incredible world filled with unique and interesting characters but the overall plot of this ending felt really all over the place and that we took a really long route to get to the ending. This finale also had a lot more noticeable “fmc written by male author” tropes that I didn’t really notice/care to notice in the first two books (yes, just because you poke fun at this trope by making a character speak this trope into existence into your own work doesn’t excuse you from said trope imo) (also take a shot everytime I write the word trope lmao). Overall did the ending work? Sort of. Were there characters/plot points that were kind of unnecessary? yes. Will I read this series again? maybe the first two, idk if I can go through this one again.

I am so happy to be able to finally say that, YES, I have finished The Nevernight Chronicles. I say finally because I have been meaning to pick up the last instalment, Darkdawn, for the longest time. If you don’t know, this series follows trained assassin, Mia Corvere, as she seeks revenge on the people who killed her family.
The highlights for the conclusion of this series were the books within books enigma, Kristoff’s self-deprecating jokes about footnotes, and some pretty badass fight scenes.
The element that stopped me giving this book five stars was how many plot climaxes there were. You have a battle scene (which as mentioned, are epic) then dialogue, then the characters are off achieving another step in their pyramid scheme of a plot, and then fight again, aaaaand repeat. Whilst this did keep things interesting with not being able to guess what happens next, I did find myself finishing one of those climaxes, and popping the book down because I felt a sense of closure for that stint of the book. Then it got a bit hard for me to pick it back up. But when I did, I enjoyed it again.
Overall, will definitely recommend it to readers of books who love complicated and morally grey characters, anti-heros, and high fantasy (because there is a lot to keep track of). Lots of triggers in this series as a whole so please double check before delving in. Lots of murder, assault, violence, gore, dickhead father figure, self harm, suicide, PTSD, scars, nightmares about traumatic events… the list goes on.
