3.5 . It really picked up in the end but overall I think the writing was kind of cheesy. I preferred Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young which is a similar plot line but she did the magical realism style a bit better .

Modern-day witches set in Kentucky. I loved the development of this town in Yarrow, Kentucky. Liz Parker spins a tale that you'll love to check out.

This one ended up just ok for me.

There were things that were good. But overall it wasn’t enough. I didn’t feel fully connected to any of the characters, and the story was a bit repetitive. And the interesting part didn’t come until page 210 (of 314). The last chunk was engaging but it didn’t even out the rest for me.

Basically this was fine… *shrug*

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

This book, ladies and gentlemen, is the crème de la crème of magical realism. I fell absolutely in love with the imagery of this story, the mystery that slowly unraveled, and the characters who brought it to life. This story was told from multiple perspectives and was filled with beautifully complicated family drama, second-chance love stories, deception, and deceit, all revolving around a magical shadow garden and a bourbon distillery.

This book tugged on all sorts of heartstrings for me. It felt like a mashup of Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic and it was absolutely perfect. At first, I was a bit thrown by all the different perspectives, but eventually, I was able to grasp the different characters and their relationships with one another. I don’t want to give too much away, but do yourself a favor and give this one a read. I can guarantee you’ll be swept away just as swiftly as I was.

In the Shadow Garden was published on September 13, 2022.

Thank you to Liz Parker, Forever Publishing (@readforeverpub & @grandcentralpub), and NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Family secrets. Lies. Mystery. Forgotten memories.

Not all is at it seems in Yarrow with the two prominent families - the Bonners and the Haywoods.

This is told from multiple POVs which could be a bit confusing at times and I enjoyed Addison’s the most. I enjoyed the family dynamic as they work to discover forgotten memories from 20 years ago. What happened? What is being covered up? This story keeps you guessing until the end.

The Shadow Garden was a character in itself and I loved how it was written. The garden takes heartbreak and trauma and grows beautiful plants which is such a lovely metaphor and imagery for healing trauma within oneself. Beauty can blossom from the unexpected.

If you’re a fan of Practical Magic, you should enjoy this one.

Thanks to Forever Pub for the gifted copy.

In the Shadow Garden is what I would consider a perfect Fall read. It’s full of magic and mystery, really atmospheric and in a small town, follows the generational story of the town’s founding families, and has multiple romance storylines. My favorite characters were Kaden and Irene, whom I fell in love with instantly, but the whole cast is just wonderful. I loved the multiple POVs in this book and the way the flashbacks to the past were done. You’ll be sucked right in for a binge read trying to figure out what happened in the summer 20 years ago and rooting for what’s blossoming in the present.

Predictable, but an interesting enough concept for me to finish. An easy read and a good one for the fall season.

Fun. Sweet. Made me tear up a couple of times. Perfectly captures grief and healing and all the magic. ♡

3.5 stars! I loved how atmospheric this book was with the magical tea shop and garden. The rivalries and history between the two main families was fun to dive into but the author had way too many POVs and side stories.
