Cliché upon cliche upon cliche. No nuance. The prince is so good that he spends his days off at the children’s hospital. He has no charm outside of just being a good dude but it’s so generic. Then her sister is so obviously evil that it’s painful. She’s not only going to take over the throne, shes also going to marry the evil enemy king. And then the princess sister plot twist is good but she did it for what?? Jealousy over being the spare and because her girlfriend can’t be with her because said evil enemy king won’t let them?? Oh and then the difficulty of determining which bloodline should rule stops being complex because it turns out that one of them was an evil dude all along. I cannot.

Much like the first book, this one was honestly painful to get through. The writing is dull and repetitive. Kiva somehow manages to make the wrong decision in literally every single situation. I had to put down the book multiple times just because I was so frustrated. What’s worse is that the chaos in the final chapters could’ve been completely avoided if Kiva had even a bit of common sense in her.
The pacing felt off, and the characters’ motivations often didn’t add up. People seemed to do things just to move the plot forward, not because it made sense for them. Overall? Not great. But at this point, I’ve committed, so I’ll probably still read the last one…

I enjoyed reading this book too, but yet again, I am disappointed by the last 25% of the book. The alliance between Zuleeka and Mirryn didn't feel telegraphed whatsoever, and the whole thing with the dagger being the Eye of the Gods also came out of nowhere. I really did enjoy the collection of characters though.

I'm still loving this series. There were a few times I thought "Girl, quit being so damn naive" but I still enjoyed every second. The plot was still predictable but there were some small twists that were super fun. I can't wait to start the next one. I didn't have the same excitement to reread this one as the first, however I'm guessing I'll want to revisit the entire series again at this rate anyways.
