'Madame Frankenstein' riffs on a familiar tale, adds some pretty great art, and combines to make a pretty good tale.

Vincent Krull is a washed up student. He wants revenge on his rival Henry who got him kicked out of school. Henry's recent gorgeous date, Courtney Bow, has ended up dead, and Vincent's plan is to bring her back to life and make her fall in love with Vincent. He's found all the parts he needs and with his lab assistant Irene, they achieve the impossible. Courtney's first days as a reanimated being are filled with learning. Vincent is determined to raise a good little subservient woman. His plans seem to be going well until he falls for a woman in a burlesque show. Meanwhile, Henry is on Vincent's trail and threatens to expose what he's done. Will Clara be jealous? Will Henry discover the macabre crime? Will Vincent's ego get the better of him?

Of course it will! Vincent is the classic egotistical scientist. We never find out why his assistant Irene puts up with him. Poor Courtney is the hapless, jilted creature. It's all written very well, like the best B-movie, and Megan Levens illustrations are ghoulishly wonderful. Joelle Jones does a great job on the covers. It was all a fun read, and I enjoyed it.

Very cool graphic novel with a reimagined telling of the Frankenstein monster with a twist. I also enjoyed the weaving of a variation of the Cottingley Fairy hoax into the narrative. The writing is snappy and the story moves at a great pace without ever feeling like it drags at any point. The story has enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and interested in what will happen next. The art is great as well with Ms. Levens’ linework perfect for telling the story and making the characters easily distinguishable from each other. I would have enjoyed some greytones or color to give the art a little more depth or texture as that is my personal preference. However, the stylistic choice works fine and does a great job of moving the narrative in a clear and concise manner.

Artwork:

I enjoyed most of the artwork and the style, especially of Gail or the female Frankenstein in this story. My favorite though were the scenes between sections – many of which seemed like they would make excellent posters. It also reminded me of an older style of drawing which reminded me even more of the older Frankenstein comic books.

Review:

Strangely this was a book where I didn’t really like any of the characters. Every character annoyed me – perhaps that’s just the way of the story but it didn’t really seem like any main character had any redeemable qualities. All of them were selfish and vain which made it hard to relate at all to the story. I’m all for bad guys and horror and evil but this just felt over the top. I did like the different spin on an old classic though – having a female character in the place of Frankenstein was very interesting.

I received an ARC through Netgalley.

First of all, I should start by saying that I love comic books. They are what got me into reading in the first place and I consider myself quite the connoisseur of the genre. I have read hundreds if not thousands of comic books in my life, some bad, some good, some comme

The beginning and middle of this are very interesting and have so much potential (and were pretty fun!), but then there's the end. The last few pages seem to validate the misogyny presented earlier in Madame Frankenstein, which is so disappointing! There were also a lot of neat plot threads that could have been used more. I'm kind of thinking that there was a sequel planned and never released, to he honest.
