Après un début très mitigé, j'ai finalement bien aimé le livre en général.
J'avais trouvé le style d'écriture beaucoup trop descriptif. Il y avait beaucoup de worldbuilding avec des détails qui n'apportaient rien en soit à l'histoire. Ça montrait la richesse de l'univers mais rajoutait surtout des longueurs aux endroits où il n'y avait déjà pas beaucoup d'action. Sinon, j'ai apprécié l'ambiance qui est installée qui me fait penser aux années 1920 avec le jazz et les quartiers mal famés dans lequel il a vu le jour. C'est très dark comme décor et j'adore.
Côté intrigue, j'ai été très déçue au début car le résumé, le titre et la phrase d'accroche insistent beaucoup sur la fameuse Nuit des Reines. Au final, elle ne représente qu'une toute petite partie de l'histoire qui est centralisée sur l'enquête de Jude. Toutefois, c'était intéressant alors j'ai continué ma lecture.
J'avoue que j'ai eu du mal avec les informations qui nous étaient données sur un plateau d'argent. Ça illustre bien le fameux principe "show don't tell". Ici, il y avait beaucoup trop de "tell".
Outre la rédaction, j'ai bien accroché à l'histoire un peu après la moitié du livre. L'action prennait vraiment de l'ampleur et les enjeux aussi. La tournure des évènements a été bien pensée et la résolution des problèmes m'a laissée bouche bée.
La fin m'a encore plus laissée sans voix. J'ai encore trop de questions, il reste pas mal de choses en suspens alors je me demande s'il n'y aura pas de tome deux ? Je parle de la situation de Jude avec André, avec son père et même avec la ville en soi.
En bref, ce n'était pas une lecture époustouflante mais elle m'a fait passer un bon moment dans un univers que j'ai bien apprécié :)

I was drawn to this book by its cover and I was sold when I read that it was a fantasy set in New Orleans, but it didn't live up to its potential. It felt like a very whitewashed idea of dark magic in New Orleans (the two majorly underutilised black characters are described as "black as coal" and "chocolate coloured" and are largely forgotten for a lot of the book - Jude's supposed best friend only appears in a couple of scenes).

The writing felt a bit lazy - it was quite a simplistic fantasy, and some elements were just lifted from history and renamed. The character of Violetta Majstro, a "witch" who tortured and experimented on slaves, is clearly a lazy fictionalisation of Madame LaLaurie.

I just felt that I wanted more from this book. New Orleans is such a rich setting, and the Creole culture and voodoo is such a fascinating subject with a ton of potential for amazing literature, but this wasn't it.

I wanted to enjoy this it sounded so good but sadly just wasn’t my kind of book, there was a lack of world building in my opinion which was greatly needed. I couldn’t connect with the characters and didn’t relate to any of them. The writing doesn’t feel write and it’s all over the place, things feel forced and the plot wasn’t good at all. Sadly not very good for me.

Yes but no, j'aime que ça se passe en nouvelle Orléans, mais pour les personnages c'était pas ça.
Le cliffhanger, à quoi bon. Un peu déçue par cette lecture.

i began reading this book with very low expectations, but it included everything i hoped for and more. the setting of baton noir immediately transported me into the world of cajou magic and i was gripped from the first chapter. however, as the middle of the story got closer i did find myself losing interest slightly, but that changed as i reached the final twist and conclusion. overall a good book, with a fantastic twist to finish :)
